I have an unusual surname. No one says it right or spells it right i mean you say it as you see it but anyway i always have to spell both my names, cause my first name even though common has 3 different spellings anyway but my parents chose to shove a letter where one normally isn't. That said i quite enjoy the fact that Im pretty sure no one else in the world has my name. I've googled it so many times!!

I don't see what is so "unusual" about the name Elijah anyway... It's biblical and has been around for centuries.

Fair enough if you don't like it, but you don't have to offer your rude "poor child/ren" comment.

Fair enough if people want to give their children Biblican names or names specific to their culture, but I do wonder at names like "Apple, Pear, Sunday, Monday, Brooklyn, London etc.."

I do believe a name has a bearing on a person's life and should not be chosen lightly, but that's just my opinion.

personally I gave my son an (actually biblical) but pretty unusual first name with Alex as a middle name (never met a nasty person called Alex) - so that if he felt too poncey when hes older he could opt for his middle name and I wouldnt be offended

at 10 he loves his name and it suits him

interestingly I always had Elijah on my list for if I was ever lucky enough to conceive again

there are some truly bad names out there but they are the generally made up by parents ones or the given weird spellings ones if my sons class mates are anything to go by. also a lot of hyphons in them. I think biblical names, particularly the less common ones, are lovely.

I also dont mind the more common names in usage, someone mentioned Daniel I always thought that was a lovely name.

I think people grow into their names and then you either like or dislike them based on your opinion of the person.

Names go round in fashions. Today's popular names were not popular when I was young but in the next generation names that have fallen out of use like John, Paul, Robert etc will probably come back into fashion. I do think parents could try a bit harder not to follow fashion though. Who wants to go to school and find 6 other kids with the same name?

My parents were going to call me Robert, but then the woman in the next bed had a baby and named him that. My Mum was anxious about being though to be copying (!!) so I ended up with what I am called. That's typical of my mother - it's not like she was ever going to see that woman again!

i agree with this, i'm one of three kids and all of us have names that are not unusual but are not really common either. I think that f you have an unusual name then you do have to kind of live up to it but i suppose it's better than having the same name as everyone else. I remember countless Liams, Lauras, Hannahs and Ryans at school but i was always the only one with my name.

Both my boys have fairly unusual/uncommon names, but we gave them traditional (family) middle names just in case.

They're happy to go by their first names (uni aged)

If my eldest had been a girl, we'd picked the very uncommon name Lauren, as I'd just read Lauren Bacalls autobiography and liked the name...seems like lots of others did too! There were a few Laurens in his year starting Primary school!

Funny you should say that, I've an unusual surname aswell, which originates from France. It too looks simple but never gets pronounced correctly, I've googled and searched many times and no one has my name from what I can tell.

I was the only person in school, college, work with my name. It didn't make me feel special.

My daughter's name was the top girls name for about 5 years in a row, but she was the only one in her year with that name, so I don't think many parents go with the name of the moment.

My Son's name is popular and there are a lot of them in his school but I had liked that name for years and taken it from an American programme I used to watch in the 80's! But then a popular film came out and it was the main character's name!
My other child's name isn't that unusual but you can never get it on any of those door signs etc that have kids names on!

Cheers for the Phoebe love I really am struggling to find something I love as much I like Josephine for a girl, it's my mums name so OH has vetoed even though mum goes by Jo. Have you considered all the nicknames?
I love Josephine too! My grandmother had a cousin Josephine who I adored. She was quite beautiful and she was called Jo. I like Josie.
My dear friends have a son called Elijah. I know a few of them.

I also think that Elijah is a lovely name. There was also an Elisha in the bible so that could be used as well.

I remember that Cher, (the singer) had a son in the 1980's who she named Elijah Blue.

Thanks to all you lovely people that don't think my grandson is a " poor thing " for being called Elijah.

Mrs Buckley has the same good taste as my daughter it would appear Huge congrats on his birth.

It's a bit dangerous to criticise any name on this thread. Someone will have a grandchild called Ebeneezer, I'm sure.

I do apologise for any offence caused by my thoughtless remark of "poor things". I didn't expect anyone to take it so seriously.

Has Enda been mentioned? Gaelic for 'freedom of spirit'. Republic of Ireland's Prime Minister is called Enda Kenny. When he was elected an American newspaper put Edna Kenny elected and the whole article was written as though it was a female Prime Minister. Apart from in Ireland, I could see Enda (when written or typed) being mistaken for Edna a lot. I like it though.

For those that are interested we found out at our 20 week scan it's a boy. Wife wouldn't let me have Evan as a name and I wouldn't entertain Ellis so for now we've agreed on Zak. Bet no one seen that coming lol.
