I mean seriously. I remember watching them on X Factor all the way through and only got that far with the help of backing tracks. yet because of their following on Twitter they seem to be doing well

and no they are NOT they next Backstreet Boys or Nsync

I think they're vastly overrated and their songs aren't all that good. What Makes You Beautiful is extremely annoying.

They'll come, they'll go - they won't leave a noteworthy mark on music or "the Industry", lets just be grateful of that!!

People are talking about how hot they are, how great they look etc. Not how good their music is, that's what the fuss is.
However, What Makes You Beautiful & One Thing are extremely cheesy but incredibly catchy. Think they'll last longer than people are writing them off.

Gordon Smart, ('The Sun'), features them in his 'Bizarre'
Column about 4 or 5 days a week. He seems to see them
as some sort of 'New Beatles'. Not that he's said that, but
it is just the hype that he makes about them.

On Saturday, he did a double page spread about them. He'd
been sent over to Canada, to do a big report on how their
North American promotion is getting on. He wrote about
them as if it were 1964, & he'd been sent over to report
on The Beatles making their first USA visit!

There is far too much fuss about them. Like The Wanted,
they are not even consistently big in the UK.

I've seen it all before - 'Biggest since The Beatles!', fuss
about the Bay City Rollers in 1974 & 1975, about Bros in
1988 & 1989, & so on. It never lasts more than 2 or 3
Years, & even then, most of these Acts are not that huge
outside the UK. (Although Bay City Rollers Documentaries
make out that they had 18 Top 5 Hits in the USA - when it
was 1! 'Saturday Night' - No.1 in early 1976).

They are basically for pre-teen girls to scream over.

I can totally see it myself.

Put it this way. If I was 15 again I could see myself being totally obessed with Harry and that is what it comes down to for all boybands really.

Really? I'd have thought you'd be a bit old at 15 (even for Harry), it's more 11-12 year olds that are obsesssed, seems to me

One Direction will NEVER be the next Backstreet Boys. The Backstreet Boys still hold the best selling boyband of all time title and are still going just as strong. They vocally p*ss all over the One Direction boys.

I can see what the fuss is with One Direction (although I cannot stand them), but they were only put together to make money and they've definitely reached out to their target audience. They're there to make money for Simon Cowell or whoever they're signed with, nothing else.

Not really, a huge part of their fanbase is 16-18, basically people at sixth form. And some fans who are the same age as them 18-20 (and much older!) I think it's a bit of a stereotype to think their fans are only pre-teens.

But having said that the pre-teen fans are most likely to buy the dolls and the 1D bedding , whereas the 'older' fans are most likely to buy tour tickets.

Most people have that misconception (including the Wanted in their latest dig at One Direction ) But looking at all the newspaper pictures and you tubes viewing stats it seems they have a lot of fans from early teens up to mid twenties.

I can understand the attraction Even at my mature age I can tell they are good looking boys and more importantly they all seem to have great personalities.

IMO every girl needs a band or artist to obsess over . It is a rite of passage but what makes one band a girl's idol and another not who knows. I suppose it is a bit like chemistry it is either there or it isn't.

I wish them well and hope they are a success across the pond. I wish we Brits weren't so hung up on not enjoying someone else's success. It isn't harming anyone and negative energy is not good for the soul

That's so true I'm 18 and most of my friends (and classmates) who are the same age as me and even older are fans of 1D.

Fair enough, I'm going tbu my 16 year old and her friends who wouldn't be seen dead buying their tickets or songs, and my friend who bought tickets for her 11 year old

I loathed them during X Factor, I called them No Direction (Not very original, I know) because they really didnt jel wll during their performances and one of them (Zayn, I think) kept messing up notes and dance moves which set them all off a bit.

But...

They've made catchy, fun, teenager pop music that kind of translates into the young adult market. I haven't really seen them perform anywhere on TV properly since the X Factor finale, but their videos are alright. The "One Thing" video in particular struck me as being very The Monkees meet The Beatles. Fun.

I remember obsessing over Britney Spears when I was about 12. I watched every TV show she was on and I even wanted to dress like her! I played her music every day and bought one of the dolls. I guess everyone obsesses over a group or singer at that age

I think they're really good, they've improved loads since TXF and I've liked every song I've heard by them. They're all good looking aswell, so that's a bonus.
