I came across these two items from the communist era - not the sort of equipment I thought they would have made

"Олимп МПК005С" (OLIMP MPK005S) open reel recorder

If you look closely you can see "CCCP" (USSR) printed on the front panel below the heads.

"Маяк-233 Стерео" (stereo cassette recorder)

Both items are still working which suggests they were well made. The only USSR equipment I remember over here were VEGA radios, radiograms and small portable tvs branded "Rigonda".

Did they keep the best products for themselves?

I bought a Russian multimeter about 30 years ago, it was cheap and seemed to work well for a while. Then the big range switcher seemed to get a bit unreliable, so I took the back off and sprayed it with WD40. The plastic melted !

Oh well.

Fascinating - I wouldn't have thought they would want their people wasting time on such a decadent western pastime.

They also made "Handheld electronic game Elektronika IM-22 "Merry Footballers", clone of "Game & Watch" from Nintendo".

and CD players "Vega PCD-122 S"

Both Zenith Cameras and Cosmos (Vega) shortwave tranny radios were available via mail order through magazines etc. Very cheap. To get a bit of foregin exchange cash. But forbidden to Soviet citizens inside the USSR (listening to shortwave was illegal!).
