New TV Advice.
Need some help in deciding which TV to go for.
It's for and elderly relative so needs to be easy to use. I'm confused myself with all the new technology. I'm still using a CRT TV so have no idea about LED, LCD or PLASMA. We're looking for a medium size (34"-38") nothing too fancy and not too expensive. If anyone could advise whether to go for a PLASMA, LED or LCD or even better recommend a TV for me would be grateful. She already has a Freeview box and am assuming all new TV's have Freeview built in? As you can probably guess am pretty much clueless so probably not the best person to be helping her but there's nobody else for her to ask. Thanks

Define "not too expensive". To some that means £3,000,000,000 to others it means 10p
![]() LED and LCD are the same thing in essence. In that the way the TV makes the pictures is the same, it's just the light source that is used to make them visible that differs. Plasma is an entirely different technology and I suspect most tellys in the range 32 to 40in are LCD/LED. At the top end are Sony and Panasonic. Somewhere below that level are LG and Samsung. Then down at the bottom are the supermarket own brands and the cheaper sets sold in those out of town sheds by the likes of Comet and Currys. I've had a couple of LG TVs and not had an issue with either. No doubt there will be other posters saying the same about the other makes. But if you can't go for the top end and want to avoid the really cheap end then the likes of LG or Samsung would probably fit the bill.As you say it is very unlikely you'll get a telly now that does not have Freeview built in. |

The cheapest I can find is this
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5296486/c_1/1|category_root|Home+entertainment+and+sat+nav|14419512/c_2/2|14419512|Televisions|14419667.htm 240 quid give or take. There is a similar model in Currys for about the same money. Can't see any Samsung's at that sort of money for a 32in set either. At that level you may have to drop down to an "own brand" make or a smaller screen size. If you are lucky you can get a pretty decent "own brand" TV. OK it won't have all the bells and whistles and the ultimate in picture and sound quality but if your relative is anything like my mum as long as she can watch "her" programmes on it that is all that matters ![]() My mum has a Wharfedale TV from Argos (no longer made) that has worked perfectly OK for a number of years. So buying "own brand" need not always mean it's going to fall apart after a couple of weeks. |

So long as she can watch the news and a couple of the antique programmes she's happy. Have just reserved for pick up tomorrow!
