Length Of Cd
Im just listening to Depeche Modes Violator cd, which contains 9 tracks; which made me think that you hardly see a cd released today with less than 13 tracks!
Does this lead to quality vs quantity debate, or would it be acceptable to release a cd nowadays with less than 10 tracks? |

It depends on the length of the tracks. I'd feel cheated if the whole running time of an album was less than 35 minutes.
It's nice to see many bands using the playing time of CD's to the full and releasing albums that are about an hour long - it represents good value for money. |

It definately depends on the length of the tracks... the Opeth cd I just had on (Deliverance btw, for all you Opeth fans!) only has six tracks but they are all over 10 minutes long (apart from one) and are all quality stuff
![]() Then again, it also depends on the genre: a lot of extreme metal/hardcore/grind albums tend to be pretty short but I don't find myself feeling ripped off. Some tracks by nature weren't intended to be long and would't work if they were any longer: thats why Pig Destroyer's latest has 21 tracks (none of which are over 3 minutes long)! |

i think generally there has been a trade off with quality - or at least the quality is still there, but its diluted with filler.
back in the days of vinyl, you used to get maybe 20 minutes a side - 8-10 tracks and all good. now the average seems to be 60 minutes - so stuff that might not have quite made it before does now. that a generalisation tho', and there are plenty of exceptions. Iain |
