Hi all,

I found this dvd player - http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/produc...de=JVC-XVS42SL

Can anyone tell me if this is a good one? I only have probably about £150 to spend, could someone please give me their thoughts, many thanks.

Seems like a good price though can't comment on the player itself, though here's a review http://www.home-entertainment.co.uk/...ArticleID=1493 that might help.

I don't think you'll be able to remote hack it though, if indeed you're interested in multi-region.

Also meant to say that I ordered my 28" Panasonic Widescreen from them in December without any hitches.

Wharfedale M5 DVD player. Available through TESCO only for some reason. Check out www.wharfedale.co.uk for the specs. £150 only. Multi region hack through the remote (takes 30 seconds to do). Great reviews - it does everything (MP3, etc), however you need to be quick to get one as they sell fast.

i would recommend a toshiba SD110E.
better than my 100e and mines great - even on a 28in widescreen...
though u need a good s-vhs cable with it or else your going to loose the quality this player can do...

look at comet.co.uk > dvd players > all dvd's and it should be there...

An extra £10 would buy you the Toshiba SD-210E from Unbeatable.co.uk. (Mods please remove link if this is a contravention of policy).

I bought this player a couple of months ago and would thoroughly recommend it. I don't think that I have ever seen a bad review.

Take a look at the review: http://www.home-entertainment.co.uk/...ArticleID=1688

Loads of DVD players to choose from, but here's a few features you might want to look out for:

1) RGB output - gives the best picture quality of all, although your TV needs to support RGB on one of its SCART sockets.

2) Multi-region hack - need I say more?

3) Digital output via optical and coaxial - well, maybe you only need one or the other, but who knows what you might want to connect it to. My TV supports both inputs, and currently I connect the DVD via the optical port. However, if I at some point upgrade my Sky box to Sky+ then I'll want to connect the Sky+ box's optical port to the optical input to the TV, meaning I'll have to change the DVD player to use the coaxial port. Get the idea ??? having both outputs can be useful!

4) Remote control unit - will it be able to control your TV, or perhaps more importantly, will your TV's remote work with your DVD?

5) Size - size isn't everything is it? Well, it might be important if, like me, you need to fit the player in a cabinet along with the VCR and Sat box, and still be able to see the front panels through the glass door. My TV cabinet is wooden you see, and the door has a thick(ish) wood frame around it.

6) Price - what do you get for the extra money? Will you really notice the slightly better sound quality? Horses for courses of course!

7) I can't think of any more off hand!

thanks for the info Our TV has 1 RGB input SCART but its currently in use for the ntl digital cable.

I would like it multi-region hackable, think it might come in handy at some point.

Noit bothered about the digital output really, we just got a dolby pro logic tv so i doubt we'd be upgrading AGAIN to get the full 5.1 or whatever.

Not too bothered about remote controls, have learnt to live with them all.

Size doesnt bother too much, we are gonna have to move the VCR anyway because theres no way a dvd player could fit in the gap that is left for it.

I'm looking for a really cheapo DVD player for about £100 as a second one. I want one with remote hacks for the region locks and to disable Macrovision. Anyone know of any good ones?
Are there region and Macrovision hacks for the Reoc Safeway are selling at £100??

The Schneider ones are real easy to hack if that helps?

Samsung ones are a bit harder, as are Sharp ones

Ok im now decising between the toshiba210e and the wharfdale m5.

The Toshiba has some amazing reviews but can it be region hacked? Im not *totally* bothered about this but it might come in handy at some point.

Also does it output in 5.1? As i have read conflicting reports on different sites about this.

The wharfdale m5, does anyone know of any reviews of this on the web? Much appreciated.

Hi folks. I bought a Sony 735 from Techtronics.co.uk and have had no problems with it, the only two things that are annoying are 1) no NTSC to PAL conversion (lucky I had a converter spare) and 2) wont play CDRs (but WILL play CDRWs).

This player got rated 95% (highest of all) in Total DVDs reviews. I managed to save £150 from buying it from Techtronics.

Thats me done, but what anyone should note when they are buyng a DVD player is:

1) Read magazines. Total DVD is excellent. Find out what they say about picture and sound quality, and also build quality and playback noise.

2) Does it do NTSC to PAL conversion? If youre planning to buy R1 titles then this is a must, otherwise you will have to spend £50 on buying a converter. Dont rely on your video or tv doing the conversion. I bought a Sony DVS300 for my family and was convinced that my Hitachi converted NTSC. I was wrong. Im now awaiting delivery of a £60 converter

3) Ease of use. Seems strange however Ive had to teach my family how to use a dvd player. Playing the film is ok, but how about navigating around the menus? And also, how easy is the remote control to use?

4) Value. I know Steve has already mentioned this but Ill say it again. Look around. I bought a £500 dvd player for £300. You can get daaam good discounts if you look around

5) Are you going to get a DVD recorder in the future? If so then you might want to buy a cheaper player then have that in another room when you get the recorder.

I think thats it. If Steve wants to add to this please do so!

In the mean time, enjoy. The DVD Player market is catered for your requirements. Youre not forced to buy a player, Im sure you will get a player thats suits you perfectly. Let us know what you get and what your views are on it.
