Marina and the Diamonds, Paloma Faith, Little Boots, Ellie Goulding, Eliza Doolittle
In my mind these are the Brit girls who are the tier below Adele and Florence (with Ellie, Eliza and Paloma a bit ahead of the other two). They're all in the process of creating their sophomore albums and will be releasing them throughout the year. Marina in April, Paloma in May and Ellie and Little boots in the Summer.
I think Ellie and Paloma will be sticking with the same formulas from their respectively successful debut albums (like Adele and Florence did) whilst refineing the sounds. Paloma will recreate the cinematic sounds of her debut whilst a hip hop elements, something which has been successfully employed by Lana Del Rey. Ellie is expected to keep to the same tone of Lights but with producers like Skrillex adding their own spin. Marina and Little Boots didn't fair as well with their debuts so obviously changes will be made, especially with their images. Little Boots is stepping away from the whole "UK GaGa" image and the music will be more stripped back and of a darker tone, although buzz single Shake retains that Dance Pop sound from Hands. Marina has probably undergone the biggest transformation, most notably dying her hair blonde and taking on a much more polished pop sound in contrast to the DIY sound of Family Jewels. She is first out of the block with concept album Electra Heart out next month following buzz singles Fear and Loathing and Radioactive. I don't know much about Eliza's next album but it is on its way, she claims to be experimenting with her sound. Personally I'm excited for our British females, Adele and Florence have set the bar high and while this lot may not reach those heights it does seem like a good time for our British girls. Is anyone looking forward to any of these albums? Will any of them recreate the success of their debuts or even surpass their debuts? |

You could also add VV Brown to that list, since she pretty much came out in the same period with the rest, also with her sophmore album coming out summer. Her image hasn't dramatically changed, however she's cut her signature roll which I guess was an indication of her music direction since she has now moved from the 60s doowop sound into a more pop-related album. Unfortunely she's probably got the less success (1 top 40 single, her album bombed at #30) However I guess most of her success came from France and her 3rd single going gold in US
In saying that, out of the rest of the females, I like Ellie Goulding. I'm glad she may keep down the same path of electropop, but I hope she doesn't go all out dubstep with Skrillex (I liked the dubstep Lights version) because too much dubstep is overbaring imo. I think Paloma might do well with her second time, I just hope she doesn't keep pushing boundaries so far with her fashion, because she may get shot down by the Gaga fans who will compare her, because there has been a lot of comparisons in the past, but her music is very different that Gaga and I think her music is probably the most 'different' out of the rest because it's a very ecclectic album she made with her first. Not really into Marina, I didn't really like Radioactive, the only song from her I like is 'I Am Not A Robot' but maybe with more listens I might like her |

Little Boots is so under rated. She is amazing! I hope she does really well with her 2nd album. Caught her live a few times, such quality

So that'll be their SECOND albums then Why the use of this word when second will do? Why not go the whole hog and call it an "era" |

It doesn't matter word you use. Sophomore is more of a term you hear American use
Paloma Faith shines brighter out of all these girls. I think she could easily create something groundbreaking and starting having huge success. Her debut album was easily one of the best debut albums i have ever heard from a British female. |

I'm here for Paloma she has more chance of being the next Adele than Marina. Her songs are too uncommercial: " Homewrecker" and Florence's last album had no great songs, and ive really tried to love it like lungs, but really wasn't in the same league. So Paloma all the way!

I love Marina and Little Boots and to a lesser extent Ellie Goulding (some of her songs are good but the rest are rubbish).

Kate bush is a fantastic example of a non commericial type Female but yet she has had a few top 10's, great selling albums and easily one of our most Iconic artists. |

It isn't about whether someone is commericial or not. It's about the quality of music. Not everyone can be commericial.

And I disagree about Marina's material being uncommercial. Hollywood, Radioactive, Oh No and the new single Primadonna are all good examples of catchy commercial pop songs. If anything I'd say Paloma's material isn't the most commercial but I guess we'll have to wait and see what sound she's gone for with her second album. I know Marina has gone for a more polished pop sound with Electra Heart, I think she's the dark horse amongst this group. |

Can't believe I forgot VV Brown, she definitely belongs in this group. She's kind of in the same position as Marina, they have nothing to lose so can almost start again and bring something totally different this time around with their sophomore efforts.
I expect big things from Paloma, her sound is very much in right now with the likes of Lana Del Rey doing similar things and to an extent Florence, all have this very much cinematic sound. I think she has the most potential to do well this year. I think Marina is going for a much more comercial sound this year, she's been working with Dr Luke (Katy perry, Britney), Swedish House Mafia, Diplo, Stargate. I think Electra Heart will be a great pop album, all the songs so far have been on point, the imagery and the concept are coming together perfectly, whether it will be a commercial success though I can't say. Marina's a difficult one to call. As for Ellie Goulding, she had the most successful debut out of the forementioned girls (partly due to her cover of 'Your Song') but I think she's going to have to bring something really special because she can be a bit bland. Out off all of them I can see her being the most likely to do a 'Duffy' but then again she could just as easily replicate or surpass 'Lights'. |

I think Ellie should not be included she is almost on par with Florence success in America etc.
The rest except for Eliza (or Lily light) i hope breakthrough and gain more success Electra Heart i expect amazing things from and Fall to grace. Also what about La Roux ? And Kate Bush WAs the first female artist to debut at number 1 in the UK with an album and has never had an album peak below six a rare example of commercial and critical. |

Lana Del Rey has brought the cinematic 1920s doomed starlet thing into the foreground now, even though Paloma did it so much better (Del Rey's voice is better though), so if only she could get that single out alongside some more interest in Lana she could be on to a winner for this second album.
Don't really care about Marina - sounds like a circus act. F. Scott Fitzgerald did the duality of the 1920's American man ("the debaucher" and "the gentlemen") nine decades ago. Ellie is nice. Bit whiny. Eliza Doolittle is complicated. She's one of those inescapably peppy little girls who refuses to grow up, but you just can't hate her for it. She's annoyingly sprite all the time, and sure, her music is juvenile but in every sense, isn't that what's so brilliant about her; that she does the whole "Heart-Stirring Nostalgia of Our Younger Years"for pretty much everyone who listens to her bittersweetly melancholic songs like 'Back To Front' and 'Rollerblades'? It's hard to be mean to her, because there's such an innocently feckless naiveté about her. Little Boots released quite possibly the best cosmologically-orientated electropop album ever in 2009. With the exception of non-songs like 'Click' and 'Ghost' there really was nothing that stops that album churning out the hooks, the lyrics and the escapism. However, 'Shake (Until Your Heart Breaks)' was a steaming pile of shit. VV Brown needs to get on with releasing 'Children'. Preferably after shooting a new video and removing Chiddy from it. I never understood why a song like 'Shark In The Water' would appear in the charts if it was only going to stall at #37? Usually if a song like that gets anywhere near the Top 50, it shoots onto radio playlists just in time for summer and then waltzes it's way up to the Top 10. Stupid Radio 1. I also loved 'Game Over', but her album was a bit naff really. So, in order of who I liked from their first albums, it'd probably looked like this:

Paloma Faith
Little Boots
(gap)
Eliza Doolittle
(gap)
Ellie Goulding
(BIG **** OFF GAP)
VV Brown
Marina & The Diamonds
But in terms of my interest now...

Paloma Faith
(BIG **** OFF GAP)
Eliza Doolittle
Ellie Goulding
VV Brown
(gap)
Marina & The Diamonds
(BIG **** OFF GAP)
Little Boots
Hope I got myself across well... |

I do agree with you Kanzi & stateofdreaming. I think Paloma has a great chance when she comes back. She has that very old time sound, and someone like Lana Del Rey has made that more popular, so when Paloma brings it back it'll be something many are interested in.
I'm definitely so excited for VV's new album because I've heard the previews of the album and it sounds great. I'm confused as to why she hasn't jumped on board and promoted Children like hell, the only thing I can think of is because she's halted her album release until summer and won't promote her album until closer the time. Her inclusion of Chiddy is probably to help promote the song. I think her main goal at the moment is to promote her music stateside first due to the UK not really taking to her with the first album. Imo, I can't blame her. Out of all the girls, Radio 1 pretty much neglected her music. Shark In The Water was a tune, it actually charted at 38 then moved up til 34 I think? But did better in France and US sales wise. I had wished Game Over might have did a lot better since it was great fun. I'm not really excited for La Roux, I don't find anything interesting about their music. Bulletproof did so well, I just thought it was naff. I think because Elly isn't likeable it may not make me want to listen to her music. I'm also not really interested in Marina, or Eliza. Not really my kind of music My terms of interest 1) VV Brown 2) Paloma faith 3) Ellie Goulding 4) Little Boots 5) Marina & The Diamonds 6) Eliza Doolittle 7) La Roux |

On how much I enjoyed them first them around:
1. Little Boots 2. Marina and the Diamonds 3. Paloma Faith 4. Ellie Goulding 5. VV Brown 6. Eliza Doolittle 7. La Roux On how excited I am for the next album: 1. Marina and the Diamonds 2. Paloma Faith 3. VV Brown 4. Ellie Goulding 5. Little Boots 6. Eliza Doolittle 7. La Roux I wasn't even aware La Roux and Eliza were putting out a new album any time soon. I really liked Eliza the first time around but to a lesser extent. I was actually really into all of them, bar La Roux, the first time around. La Roux never really grabbed me. Everything about Electra Heart seems flawless, I'm beyond excited for that album. Paloma Faith could very well be a success following Lana Del Rey, I'm very excited for that too. I don't expect to hear Lollipops & Politics anytime soon but I'm still looking forward to it. VV Brown's team are shocking. Nothing worse than an album that keeps getting pushed back. Little Boots disappointed me with Shake. And again I'm not expecting any new material any time soon so I haven't even thought about her. Her first album was amazing though. |

I'm looking forward to more stuff from Marina and Eliza. Thought Ellie's debut album wasn't as good as it could have been but, due to her critics choice win, i think she will have a lot more publicity than the others with her next album. I love VV Brown and i hope she has some success, whereas a feel Little Boots and Paloma Faith are quite poor, nothing really stands out about them tbh.

I don't see the fascination with La Roux either, but then again I don't think anyone likes, or ever did like, "La Roux". They just liked 'In For The Kill' and 'Bulletproof'.

Why or why do people in the UK link quite different artists (in the pop sphere) together. Please celebrate individuality people. Why do you think pop music is so homogenised at the moment when thread's like this are started.Apart from that I think this thread is sexist as well.
This thread is basically a load of nonsense to my mind. |

This thread is basically a load of nonsense to my mind. Also not every single person on this forum is from the UK. And you kind of answered the OP's question in regard to this thread. It's celebrating individuality. All the female artists are different, they aren't all straight forward pop when you have artists like VV Brown who was 60s inspired doo wop, Ellie Goulding who is more Electro pop and Little Boots who is quite electronic. |

I don't think the OP's idea was to create a sexiest thread or pit these artists against eachother. I think it's more the fact of these list of female artists all came on the scene at the same time, had different amounts of success and have very differentiating genres with their first album. So it's more a thread to ask forum members how they think they will fare on their second albums. Will the genre be different? Will some have more success after their first didn't create high standards.

Have you checked the similar artist lists on Last.fm or other similar music comparison sites. It is almost laughable which artist's are compared to each other. This does have a homogenising effect to my mind.So no it's not celebrating individuality when there is pressure from the Major labels for artists to jump on the latest genre bandwagon - dubstep anyone
