We've basically shifted to bland and boring music sung with no emotion.
They're all mediocre, especially Sheeran and Sande. 'Next to me' is just trying to jump on the Adele bandwagon. And no matter what you say, you can't deny even the "mediocre" (your words) Sheeran and Sande are better than the songs talking about putting your hands up in the air and getting drunk. |

Ah, you mean Hangover? Just found it on iTunes chart and listened to the 90-second preview - wow. Definitely one of his most repulsive songs yet, usually songs about drinking aren't as in-your-face as that.
![]() Taio Cruz is already at #18 on iTunes. Gotye won't be #1 for much longer. Things will be back to normal soon. ![]() All those Taio Cruz and Lady Gaga and Flo Rida songs are much more boring than Emeli Sande and Adele in my opinion. |

Yeah, it's awful. The instrumental is EXACTLY the same as that really generic song by Flo Rida called Good Feeling which got to #1 a while ago. They all sound the same, it's so depressing.

I see music such as Gotye's and Adele's as 'mainstream alternatives'. The reason they are so successful, imo, is due to their distinction from the majority of the commercial hits around at this time rather than a shift in mainstream musical tastes.

Does it really matter ? Musical tastes and genres shift all the time. You'll always get people decrying whatever genre becomes popular because it's not "their" genre and the cycle goes on.
Can't we just enjoy all music ? |

I'm not a fan but I can never consider someone like her as boring or generic. While Rihanna's constantly singing about sex and Katy Perry's music doesn't stand out a great deal, it's nice to have a pop star who sings about 'Judas' or being 'born this way'. At least she's actually distinctive and has personality in her music, IMO anyway. ![]() I could understand if you meant that she does electro-pop like the other two but the language she uses is at least different to what you'd expect.

Can't we just enjoy all music ? Just googled this article about the generation gap in Hip-hop http://allhiphop.com/2009/09/05/is-t...lling-hip-hop/ There doesn't seem to be much of backlash / generation divide happening with Hip-hop.Perhaps there is a little bit of a generation gap with Britpop (dad rock) - but even that has it's following with alot teenagers e.g. Blur being on Brit Awards / being part of Olympics closing ceremony / Oasis & off shoots still being popular with youngsters etc. |

Fireflies isn't that far removed from club music though is it.It is very danceable isn't it - definatly part of the rediciously named, misnomer of a tag, Indie-Disco.or part of broader elctro-pop

It can't be rock music, because rock isn't mainstream
The UK media seems to have an agenda against promoting popular rock music, which means that alot of rock doesn't make it to that mainstream status. There are 100's of moderately popular rock bands though. If you add the popularity of those bands altogether you will find that rock music, as a whole, is the most popular form of music by a long way.Even the broad based Heavy Metal genre is the most popular genre of music in the UK.There are so many sub-genres & divides in fan loyalty within those sub-genres most bands don't even get above moderate sales even. Rock is a massive market though.A completely different animal to 'pop' music .It all depends on how you define mainstream (parts of the sum, or sum of the parts). The out right statement of saying 'rock music isn't mainstream' is factually incorrect though without expanding it a little. |
