Humax HDR - TV Delay... Help

08-03-2012
I've just bought a new TV (LG 42LW450U), since the move to this TV from my old one I have two Freesat related issues. I tried discussing this with Currys but they haven't the foggiest as to what I'm on about, so I thought I'd ask 'real techies'.

Issue 1 - The picture quality doesn't seem as good (even though it's a better spec on paper). I have tinkered with the TV settings and everything is as I would have expected it. I have upgraded the HDMI cable to the latest HDMI 1.4 (as is needed for 3D, no change in picture quality.

Issue 2 - I have a delay between pausing my Humax box and it actually pausing on the TV, the picture pauses almost instantly but the audio takes a good 3 seconds or so to stop. This delay was about 8 seconds before I replaced the HDMI, still it's annoying as I didn't have any delay with my old TV.

Any help and/pr advise greatly appreciated. Now I'm off to see where I can post for connecting mac to this TV

The hdmi cable will make no difference at all. The delay in pausing the audio is down to the ac3 audio used on HD transmissions, if you are only using a TV for the audio turn off ac3 audio output.

Menu/settings /TV Setup/Dolby Digital Off

As for the picture quality turn off all the crap picture quality extra options you get turned on by default like noise reduction etc.

You will only see the benefits of HD over SD if you either

Sit closer to the screen, try getting closer to a SD transmission. The picture artefacts will be obvious.

Use a larger TV, same as sitting closer to a smaller TV

Thank You for the quick reply...

I've had HD since the launch on Freesat. It just seems my old HDTV gave a much better picture quality that I have now with this new one.

Here's my options and how it's set now

Dynamic Contrast - Medium
Dynamic Colour - Low
Clear White - Off
Skin Colour - 0
Noise Reduction - Low
Digital Noise Reduction - Medium
Gamma - Medium
Black Level - Low
Eye Care - Low
Real Cinema - On
Colour Gamut - Wide
xvYCC - OFF (This option is greyed out)

I'm afraid I have no idea what I am doing...

I've had a tinker... I've got the picture looking better... Any idea on the pause delay? Picture stops straight away, audio can take a good 3 seconds to stop.

Anything that says dynamic or noise reduction or auto contrast etc turn it off as a starting point.

AS for Eye Care - goto Speccsavers.

As already said if the audio run on annoys you set the box to output lpcm stereo rather than ac3 as per my original post. Unless you are using kit capable of using 5.1 surround you don't need ac3. (Dolby Digital)
