So let me get this straight. You want someone who is an expert on publishing to Kindle to come and show you FOR FREE how to do it? And there is nothing in it for them whatsoever. Can you see the flaw in that plan?

Maybe offer a one-off fee, then? It sounds like a relatively skilled task.

My dad happens to be starting up an e-pub business. He's a human being, and they tend to live on food, which costs money, to feed his very clever brain In short, he needs paying!

I wouldnt dream of asking anyone to share their expertise , an expertise that they learned and perfected for free .Why on earth would they do that for a perfect stranger .
You boss is a very silly person and I would tell him so .

People will work for free if you feed them for free, give them a housing, lighting and heating for free and settle up on their council tax.... or the company could pay someone for an hour or so to do the job properly. That way the company get an invoice and it's all legal too

Well, if the job's beyond you I suggest you just give up, or else pay someone properly for doing the job for you. Why should anyone want to do the work for nothing? The "business" you work for sounds alarmingly unbusinesslike.

wouldnt this be ideal for someone setting up a consultancy business.
having a small business in your portfolio is better than nothing to show other potential clients

I suggest you contact your local Business Link, your local university business studies department or a business school near you or even your local newspaper. I am sure you will get some sort of help. Business Link is there to help small businesses. Local Chamber of Commerce, same thing: loads of small business contacts and networks so maybe will know someone who could help. Well worth a phone call or visit to Business Link to see what they have there by way of expert knowledge or contacts. University business departments love to have dealings with local businesses in their area and local newspapers love to write about such things. You will probably get a business student who can provide what you need and the newspaper will do a nice story about university helping a local business.

There is a section on the jobcentre website for 'volunteer jobs' most seem to be for charities so I don't know of you would be eligible to advertise. you could also try facebook (or similar) if your town has a Facebook page you could also ask there. someone who has newly learnt this may volunteer in return for references etc to say they can do the work.

http://www.swapaskill.com/ may be worth a try, if your boss has some skill he can offer in return.
