I usually record racing then whizz through it as usually at football or busy Sat pm. I usually sort my bets out in morning then watch late at night and see where my money has been lost

I've not seen much of Graham Cunningham before, seemed to get into his stride ok and worked well with Jimbo. Funny seeing Franks being interviewed.
It doesn't feel too different to me which is good. I assume Clare is busy with this BBC 1 thing tonight

Not necessarily, as that is pre-recorded.

I noticed today that C4 racing has now gone down the route of sport transmitted by other broadasters in doing away with end credits.

I read during the week that the next time she's presenting is at Ascot on the 19th. When you think that Royal Ascot, the Derby Meeting, the Grand National meeting, Glorious Goodwood and Cheltenham will take up about half of the approx 40 days she is contracted to work, you won't see her regularly on Saturdays.

No credits is a far cry from the good old days of fading from them and the theme music into the finish of the days big race!

Its all a bit serious. Big Mac loosing his temper with the punters though unprofessional created great viewing. It just does not seem very light hearted. I miss Al, Tommo and Big Mac. You could hear Thommo in the background at Chepstow today.

Yet by the same token that makes the mass sackings all the more pointless. I agree, it's pretty much the same show - and that's what it needs to be. So why have revolution in the line-up when it's merely been evolution in the style of the programme?

Exactly - for all the talk of attracting casual viewers and making it more accessible to boost the viewing figures, I think they've taken it in the other direction, if anything. There's only so much you can do if you are still going to serve the core audience. Even the casual viewer needs a passing interest in racing even to consider tuning in. They've only succeeded in losing the warmth of the show (especially on days when Clare Balding doesn't appear).

She's contracted to do 40 days. Her gameshow will have been recorded weeks ago one in one go, most likely.

One thing I noticed about Sat is that Richard Hoiles was commentating from Sandown only for C4 and they didn't just take the course feed of Ian Bartlett. I can't remember many times this has happened for anyone else bar Simon Holt. And I know sometimes even when it is Simon he is at the course not just for C4. I remember when C4 annouced there new team Hoiles was one of the mentioned names so I wonder if at the main meeting they will always use there own man rather than take the course feed?!

Yes I assume Simon Holt is on holiday as I guessed Chepstow would have had a commentator other than the course com. I think Hoiles is going to fill the old GG role

Channel 4 Racing and The Morning Line will not have a Red Button prompt from this Saturday onwards as A+N Mobile + Tv (DMGT) have closed the Text on 3 and Text on 4 services today.

Some advertisers from Text on 4 are advertising on Challenge TV: go to LCN 206 of DTT and the press Red-Blue-Red to get to the Tipsters' page.

Simon Holt is usually off at the start of the year, I think he is missing this Saturday too

Read somewhere today that the Welsh National is moving to the first Saturday after Christmas from this year so it can be shown on C4

I expect the process of gradually moving all the main races to saturdays will accelerate now

This time last year there were still some regions yet to DSO so there was more choice to viewers in 2013 ...

There still isn't an alternative if you're on Freeview. Racing UK is available as subscription only on some boxes. No ATR.

I meant more choice to those on Freeview for alternatives to Horse Racing on TV than late adopters were getting from just the three or four other analogue channels.

It will be interesting to see the rating for the last meeting of the old guard on C4.

Having spoken to a few people, many with SKY etc. watched the Welsh National on ATR on Sat as they did not like C4 new coverage. Also the blue graphics are awful. You can barely see the writing even on a 40 inch TV.

Would be a very odd decision to make if you were an HD viewer. Watching ATR on an HD television is like watching through the hubble space telescope with cataracts. Channel 4 HD's picture is excellent in my opinion.

ATR will be going HD this year it was announced when they moved to the new studios.

Simon Holt doesn't always do every week though. Admittedly he does most of them but there are some weeks when they just take the course feed of all meetings covered (some weeks this could be Holt) Unless of course under new regime C4 will always have their own onsite commentator?

Ironic given that ATR's graphics are also white text on Blue.

Solid blue w/ white text is ok for on screen graphics. It's just that the new C4 racing have graded depth of blue, so some of the text is slightly 'lost' in the lighter blue zone.
Also, it is strange that they've not gone down the RUK/ATR/old C4 Racing route and put the time and meeting on screen for the duration of the race.
Surprised they didn't put it right under the 'fences to jump' graphic (which, for the flat season, could be changed for a distance still to run graphic)

I might be in the minority but you don't have to watch the racing live to have had a wager ... it is still the same thrill/letdown as long as you don't know the result beforehand and the bookies will still pay out.

Anyways the coverage was a lot better in my opinion and the programme had a better flow to it than previously with decent insight from Graham Cunningham - it also had far less ad-breaks to boot ... the weak link for me looks to be Richie Persad but I think we all knew that beforehand.
