But I must ask does it really matter until the big races like Cheltenham Gold Cup or the Grand National and their respective meetings

Viewing figures for last Saturday are FAIRLY similar to 2012. I think it's unfair to show 1st Jan being down because of the new team. It's 'main draw' of Cheltenham was off!

It's not unfair because I have clearly stated which meetings each programme covered. It's a fair point to make about the New Year's Day programme but Saturday's had one EXTRA meet and still rated lower overall, although it had a higher peak. It looked as though people tuned in for the big race and quickly tuned out again because they didn't like what they saw from the new team.

Anyway, it's still early days for the new C4 Racing. I just thought there might be some interest in how the viewing figures are holding up. With all the promotion for it I wasn't expecting the numbers to be down at all personally.

I think that's a little unfair. Not liking the new team would be one of many possible factors which could have influenced viewing peak and audience behaviour.

As a working hypothesis it's ok, but shouldn't really be stated as a strong assumption. Personally, I felt it was a weak day's racing and only the big race really caught my attention when I was looking at the cards Saturday morning. Resultantly I didn't watch any of the programme or have a bet.

Ok. Well the numbers are there to compare, make of them what you will. I doubt the standard of racing on offer on Saturday was much if any worse than the same day last year so I didn't factor that into my conclusions.

McCririck to sue Channel 4 over 'ageism':

I wondered how long this would take. Do people think he has a genuine case? I am no expert and haven't fed much into it but surely the new people coming into C4 (is it IMG?) can bring in who they want as the last contracts will be null and void?

Thing is though McCririck has mentioned he was on a rolling contract - so surely his was up at the end of 2012?

Wouldn't McCrick's contract have been with Highflyer, where does he get £3m from?

Sounds like he thinks C4 should provide him with a pension pot.

Maybe he could put his tick tack to use and be a sign language person in the corner of the screen?

I don't watch much Horse Racing, but when I have seen John on the racing he is probably the most knowledgeable one of the whole lot, you would have thought it would have been a good move by IMG to at least have given him until Next January, for continuity reasons if not anything else.

People getting axed or sacked because of agism, seems to be happening more on TV these days, Nick Ross, being axed from Crimewatch after being ts main presenter for over 20 years, was a mistake, and also dumbed down the show.

I watched the first couple of Channel 4 Racings, since the turn of the year, as when a programme changes, I like to see how.

Apart from Jim McGrath, and Tanya, the new crew scream out young and trendy.

It will depend on the terms of the contract tbh, it would have been up, but to officially end it it's likely they would have had to have given him required notice (which I presume they did) and vaild reason to do so, otherwise it would just rollover and renew at the turn of the year.

Depends on how the lawyers take it to court, the problem with an age discrimination suit is that Tanya Stevenson has been doing the same role on shows for a few years now, so they could easily find a way to argue that she was the better candidate to do it and they had no other role for him. It's likely they go to court saying that his contract terms were breached because they didn't give a valid reason and it'll end up in some form of settlement

In October when it was said that he wouldn't be part of the coverage he says he was told it by the Channel 4 Head of Sport and that he gave him no reason for it, so I imagine the contracts came under Channel 4

Tanya doesn't seem to no all the Tic Tac signs like John used to do, which for me was part of the enjoyment

I have reason to believe he was on a Channel 4 contract.

Can anyone actually see any difference to the C4 racing, apart from them regurgitating various tiremsome presenters/interviewers from other channls?

They seem to be digging from the bottom of the barrel ...... you are out of work, no longer required by another channel, then come and work for us!

As for getting rid of Thommo and Cattermole in favour of the loathsome Mick Fitzgerald and Rishi Persad, words fail me. Could they not find somebody with charisma and personality to present their racing, at least Cattermole was not bad to look at, and his rapport with Emma was quite good and very amusing at times.

Fitzgerald's voice is making me want to switch over.

She was on when she presented Racing from Cheltenham on New Years Day. She will mainly just present the major meetings on Channel 4.

CB is contracted to work 40 days a year for C4 Racing. She'll be on next week at Ascot and the following week at Cheltenham.

There's an interview with Carl Hicks in the Racing Post today. He says they have not decided on Simon Holt's co-commentators for the National yet. They also have not ruled out using the old BBC theme music such as the Champions theme and Gabriel's Oboe.

He says they are not trying to sideline the Betting Ring but acknowledges there has been concerns, even amongst the Channel 4 team, and says 'There are other things we have to get in the programme, so on certain days betting might get shorter shrift.'

Will be surprised if Richard Hoiles and Stewart Machin are not chosen to commentate on the National as they - along with Mark Johnson - have done the on-course commentary for the last couple of years.

As for using the "Champions" theme, it wouldn't be right for C4 to use it, as it was synonymous with the BBC's coverage; as I said earlier on in the the thread, it would be like C4 using "Soul Limbo" when they had the terrestrial rights for cricket.

Ironically the second meeting Clare Balding was supposed to cover for Channel 4, from Ascot tomorrow, has also been abandoned because of the weather
