John Penney was certainly alive in 2010.

Thanks SouthCity, thought that may of been the case and I fondly remember the days he presented the ITV 7 along with John Oaksey and even Ken Butler if my memory serves correct.
John Penny is indeed still with us but it was sad to hear that R.Gilbert departed from us in the late 1990's.

so thats 5 hours a day.. so really all the races.. that is good, and its great Ted Walsh is back for them again”

I note that Brian Gleeson, primarily from Irish TV, appears in the Radio Times listings for Channel 4's National coverage.

He was used regularly on BBC's Grand National coverage from around 2000.

He was part of the BBC's Grand National team to give "an Irish perspective" - similar to his RTE colleague Ted Walsh does for C4 at Cheltenham - from around 2000 to about 2008. Don't know why the Beeb dropped him, especially when Angus "Statto" Loughran was binned by the Beeb at the end of 2008; they would have been better off retaining him, a bona fide betting expert, rather than John Parrott.

The Grand National Meeting has been broadcast in HD on the BBC over the last few years. I never watched the racing from Aintree on Thursday afternon as I was busy and not at home, but according to Skys EPG the Grand National Meeting on Channel 4 is not being broadcast in HD this year Which means for the first time for a few years its only being broadcast in SD. Can anyone who watched the racing on Thursday confirm this.
Ian.

Does Simon Holt pick up commentary earlier on that Jim McGrath and P.O'S used to? I read somewhere that he would commentate on more of the race than they did

He did didn't he. It when't Holt, hoiles, Bartlett, Holt.

If it were the BBC system it would have been Holt, Hoiles, Bartlett, Hoiles, Holt.

Richard Hoiles sounds to flat to me I don't like his stule. Great to hear Ian Bartlett and Holt was good as usual.

I can't help but finding the coverage flat though. I think I enjoyed the BBC coverage more last year with is a rare thing to say really. Nick Luck comes across as the new Julian Wilson to me.

Are you sure its in HD whenever i have watched C4 racing it has always been in SD thats despite them having the 4HD logo in the corner of the screen. Yesterdays racing was not in HD and if you check the programme info it states no HD. I do hope todays metting will be in HD but i doubt it.

I think I would of had John Hunt in place of Hoiles if I could.....excellent commentator with only Holt better at the moment.

According to my Sky epg the Grand National is being broadcast on C4 HD but it is shown as being in SD NOT HD. All HD programmes are shown highlighted on the epg, this one is not highlighted.

Surely virtually all OBs are HD these days, it would indeed be a retrograde step to broadcast it in SD.

C4 are notoriously bad with the EPG info they give Sky.

How many US imports on C4 HD, More4 HD and E4 HD show DD (for DD5.1)?

And how many films are shown with DD on Film 4 when they don't actually broadcast in DD?

I don't think Richard had the most comfortable day yesterday, judging by his Twitter feed his commentary box was swaying quite a lot in the strong winds, which probably didn't help.

I think you're right, looking on my Freeview EPG no programme on C4 HD over the next week is listed as being in HD, which can't be the case.

I may sound like a broken-record but Ian Bartlett for me is 2nd best comm behind Holt... and brilliant to hear as part of the CH4 Grand National commentary team.

Although its not highlited as in HD my picture is a million times better on CH 4 HD channel than CH 104-so i am happy with that

C4 coverage has been so good that i hardly notice that its not on the beeb

Simon Holt has been outstanding today. His calling of the Melling Chase was superb

I watched the race on Racing UK (professional as usual) but was unimpressed by the later fence-by-fence replay on C4. Fences in the wrong order plus an incomplete list of where the non-finishers left the race. BBC used to get this right.

The coverage was much inferior to the BBC. Clearly they did not have as many cameras. Some shots out of focus. No aerials. Slomos were very slow (so to speak). Virtually no close-ups. They actually missed the start completely because the commentator was waffling in vision. It lacked drama and atmosphere (and I'm not particularly interested in horse racing). And it wasn't even in HD

Yep I made that point on another thread....the fact they crossed over to simon Holt literally 5 secs before the off was very unprofessional and completely caught the poor guy unaware as the next thing he knew the race was off and it was almost missed.
Not blaming Holt at all but surely Clare Balding knew the start was fast approaching.

Not sure why you of all people would be perpetuating this myth, but it was all in HD.
