Only 1.55 million watched last Saturday's Derby on C4. P**s poor if you ask me.

What was the story behind the BBC TV head racing commentators job and Julian Wilson and Peter O'Sullevan.
I thought it was hilarious. Julian Wilson must have been so bitter that everybody loved Peter O'Sullevan but nobody liked him. There was more acrimony on BBC Radio with Cornelius Lysaght and Lee McKenzie. Re The Derby ratings, what did it used to get on Wednesdays? I know i'm going back a bit, but i remember it was always good fun to sneak out of work and watch it |

I am probably hugely wrong but was it Jim McGrath (Australian ex BBC Commentator) commentating on C4 at Royal Ascot on the 3:45 race?

The RUK coverage of Ascot this week has been top notch compared to C4 , I wonder how the C4 viewing figures are holding up today ? Doesn't seem a massive improvement if any at all

So how did RUK manage today, especially with afternoon meetings at 3 other RUK tracks? However, if I was Ascot, I'd be looking to have some kind of "exclusivity window" for the Royal meeting, with no other coverage (or one other meeting maximum) from another course in the afternoon of the days of the meeting. I appreciate as RUK have the lions share of coverage from all the British racecourses, but no other racing takes places on RUK tracks during the Aintree Grand National meeting and Huntingdon is the only other RUK-aligned course that races during the Cheltenham Festival. |

Well C4 must hope to have picked up some viewers, who in previous years tuned in to the ATR coverage, to offset lost viewers from their coverage from last year.

It was ATR who were looking very sheepish they made no attempt to even acknowledge Ascot existed, they sent Chapman to Down Royal and didn't even mention any winners or anything or do in house commentary, the only mention it go was a sarky comment from Chapman in a small runner field at around 3 when he said "just as difficult as a Royal Ascot gold cup field to pick". |

All the races ran to time on RUK so they had no issues, they did rush off from the other tracks very quickly. RUK were lucky the other fixtures were flat and 10 mins apart.

According to the Racing Post, Channel 4's average rating for the Saturday at Royal Ascot was 605,000 (peaking at 883,000). Two years ago on the corresponding day, BBC1 (in its last year of covering Royal Ascot) achieved 1.899,000 (admittedly with Black Caviar having a starring role). This year's five-day average is 583,400 compared with 658,000 in 2013 and 1.383 million for BBC in 2012. Completely disastrous viewing figures for Channel 4!

Simple answer is if it isn't on BBC-1 or itv people won't watch even if it was Andy Murray or England in World Cup, people are so bizarre when it comes to changing channels I cannot understand it the same when they switch Wimbledon to BBC-2.

Do you really believe that is the reason for a 60 percent fall in two years? I watched the Saturday action on Racing UK.
We had this discussion in Wimbledon thread last year, there are people who have Freeview who have never gone above number 5 on their box which is why having a high channel number is very important to tv companies and why the BBC always switch Andy Murray games to BBC-1 as people just won't change channels. |

Yes seriously there's a lot of people in this country who just default their tv to BBC-1 never change channels and have it on in the background. They probably don't even remember it is on Channel 4, they just watch what comes on.

6 out of 10? I can understand a certain number but more than half of viewers switch on a tv and just leave it on BBC1? If this were true, BBC1 would always have a considerable majority of viewers.
Only a major survey of the viewers who watched in 2012 and asking them why the didn't watch in subsequent years will we know the answer. |

Also there's the snobbery that Channel 4 inferior to the BBC in some minds but I would bet if it was on BBC-1 next year would be back well over 1 million.

How much acrimony was there in the BBC TV horse racing team?
I've heard about the time when Julian Wilson thought he was going to become the main commentator when Peter O'Sullevan was approaching 65 as he thought O'Sullevan was going to retire but O'Sullevan decided to stay on. That must have been a real kick in the teeth for Wilson. . Quote:

I thought it was hilarious. Julian Wilson must have been so bitter that everybody loved Peter O'Sullevan but nobody liked him. Unfortunately for Wilson, O'Sullevan had only been talking about retiring from his newspaper work with the Daily Express and the Press Association and by the time Wilson realised his mistake the ITV job had long gone (to Graham Goode). It was a genuine misunderstanding and there had never been any intent to deceive Wilson, but it was understandable that it left a nasty taste, especially as O'Sullevan went on commentating for another 14 years, not retiring until 1997 when he was 79. |
