I think he may surprise us. Him and Fitzy will give a much better insight than Jim McGrath and the truly awful Graham Cunningham. Much more down to earth.

What was the reason for bringing in Cunningham? I don't see what he brings to the table? TBH I'd hardly heard of him when he started on there

I never liked him on RUK and don't now he has gone onto C4. Find him arrogant and the derogatory comments he used to make about ATR were uncalled for.

He was good on RUK, and has a long professional relationship with McGrath (timeform)

However moving to 4 he became a "comedian" overnight, and changed his style.

I am with you lot on this, don't see what Cunningham brings that you don't get with McGrath. If C4 didn't have McGrath, Holt and Luck they would be a bit of a shambles. Fitzgerald is OK but he needs those other three in my opinion.

All Cunningham seems to say is so and so is likely to be "setting the fractions". I like discussion of sectional times etc but I can see how the once a week viewer is completely put off.

I wonder if the BBC will ever return to racing. I'm sure if the price was right, they'd want the Grand National back as Channel 4 has no sense of occasion with the meeting and seem to treat it like every other Saturday meeting they cover.

Channel 4 have been absolutely brilliant with the national.
Extended coverage of days 1 and 2 with morning lines, the national then kicks with an Alan Carr themed programme.
The day begins with an extended morning line, followed by a special Saturday brunch and then the racing.
It's promotional activity is also far superior to anything the beeb put out.

The problem is one of roles. Jimbo and Cunningham both fill the form expert slot, and so one is redundant. It will be the same if AP works alongside Fitzy rather than replaces him.

Regarding AP himself, he is an excellent judge, unlike many jockeys, and his Telegraph column was required reading. Whether he has the charisma for television is less certain, and in any case he will start off nervous, so I'd like to see him paired with an experienced broadcaster, at least till he finds his feet.

The Morning Line has now hit a risible new low. It really does need stopping.

Today just descended into a bitch fest, Emma Spencer and AP McCoy clearly having issues, McCoy at one stage telling her to "give it a rest", slating her outfit and generally looking and sounding completely pissed off, and Spencer dishing out a couple of catty remarks to him as well over his weight, probably not fussed on his comments over women receiving a 3lb claim earlier in the week.

Tom Segal on the end of the sofa was pretty much a spectator.

Perhaps I am in a minority but I'd almost rather they didn't have a morning show than the complete waste of an hour dished out earlier.

Nick Luck is very accomplished as a presenter but he's also very dull and doesn't really have the man on the street charisma of someone like Derek Thompson or John Francome that's needed to engage the viewer.

Noticed that it had moved back to 9AM........

First time I've watched it for ages

I thought AP was OK. But I wonder if he'll get bored with it.........he never struck me as being the media type

Fitzy is a bit useless...... 'AP will tell ya'......well if AP is going to tell us then why are you there !

Emma.........never understood what she brings to the party, She just picks favourites and says 'they might have a chance' , D'oh !

Nick, Tom and Rishi are fine........

But you are in some way symptomatic of the problem, easily pleased with the fare on offer.

Its honestly time that someone at C4 approached Matt Chapman and made him the bloody face of racing on terrestrial TV. He is fantastic and would engage a wider audience. Far too many safe pairs of hands, particularly the names you mention, Persad, Fitzgerald etc,

You are dead right about Emma Spencer though. Completely useless.

Horse racing is outdated and gladly petering out. The sooner it is gone the better. There is no longer any need to push animals to their limit just to please gambling addicts and thankfully very little call for it to be televised anymore.

It was purely banter between Spencer and McCoy; after all, Spencer is bezzie mates with Mrs McCoy.

As her forte is more for for the flat, we must note that Spencer is on this weekend's coverage from Cheltenham by default, due to the fact that Alice Plunkett - an out and out jump racing girl - is on compassionate leave following the horrible accident her husband William Fox-Pitt, the 3-day eventer, had last month.

I haven't watched the Morning Line in ages, too early for me. C4 have too many presenters and pundits so I don't know why they've recruited ano in AP. I no longer watch the racing live but record it so I can skip through the dross and especially Fitzgerald. I preferred the team they used to have before all the changes but I'm glad C4 show horseracing and I'd miss it very much if they didn't.

I wouldn't say I was easily pleased.......as I said in my post it's the first time I've watched it for ages. That's only because it was raining and I was putting off going out

I don't normally watch it because it's a load of rubbish

I don't watch C4 racing either because I've got ATR and RUK and they're both 10 times better

Agree about Matt........he's brilliant !

At one time Morning Line always started by considered the going, and early prices from bookmakers for the big races - as you might expect from its title. It has already stopped doing a lot of this, and starting at 9am is too late, as many bookies have already cut their prices by then. It has become a rather inconsequential horse-themed chat show.

That will be the same horse racing that is the second most watched sport in the UK. With all meetings posting record attendances?

As for C4, AP was excellent yesterday, however he should be used sparingly at the biggest meetings.
Spencer should only be used (if at all) during the summer months, her knowledge of national hunt is minimal.

Agree on Matt Chapman, he'd need to tone down a little but I also think he should be the face of C4 racing.

Horse racing purely survives on betting. Remove the betting on horses and the sport would die overnight, the crowds would disappear completely to just a few hardy enthusiasts. The people just go for the betting rather than the horse racing.
