I didn't bother. I knew it would be an hour of annoying Nicholls boot licking. Hes undoubtedly a brilliant trainer but nothing he reveals is surprising or interesting yet the way people fall off their chair at every word would make you think he's resurrected Kauto Star.

There isn't much point talking about betting at 9:00. By 9:15 nearly all bookmakers will have cut their headline early morning prices, and some will have done so before the programme even starts. From that perspective alone, the programme should be on at 7:30-8:30, although that might not suit other audience segments and it why 8-9:00, with the betting related content concentrated at the beginning was what worked for years. Instead in recent months the first part of the programme has tended to become a review rather than a preview.

To give the morning line some credit today. The piece with Victoria Pendleton was excellent

I don't have the subscription tv Racing channels, RUK or ATR. So if a decent meeting's being shown by Ch4, I'll look forward to it, maybe have a punt, Lucky 15 or whatever. I used to watch The Morning Line most weekends, couldn't tell you the last time I watched it now though, Emma Spencer does my head in, i.e. Nick Luck - "who do you fancy in this race Emm??" Spencer - "Can't see past the favourite, Nick" and repeat ad nauseum, for every race she's asked about.
Francombe, Thommo etc are sadly missed on Ch4 racing.

The morning line an absolute disgrace today.
The biggest handicap (outside of the national) and we don't even get 10 minutes. Spencer, Fitzy & AP. Not a form student in sight.
Pathetic

AP was an improvement on 2 weeks ago but the rishi interview with tans and the other betting bloke was a trainwreck, but at least the lambourn segment was brilliant

AP was fine. The Lambourn piece whilst being good could have been done on a quieter Saturday

I had a strange dream last night........

I dreamt that there was racing on Channel 5 in the early evening with Nick Luck and Steve Mellish

For some reason my cable was down so reluctantly I'd gone to C4 to watch the racing and it wasn't on........and I was flicking the channels and came across racing on channel 5

........and in between races they were having a serious discussion on the future of British racing

Any later, and they'll be needing floodlights

the race is to go off at 515 to accommodate football supporters too and not clash with live commentary on 5 Live.

You believe what The Sun says ? I wouldn't wipe my arse on that rag.

Having being to the National I can confirm it is perfectly bright and light at 5.15

A few other links:

Liverpool Echo - http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport...l-run-10530995

Daily Mail - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/rac...rt-5-15pm.html

Some of those are suggesting the same reason.

You seem to believe what The Sun says

Of course the reason of "to get more TV viewers" is really the same reason as "to avoid the football", as by avoiding the football it gets more viewers....

The Sun aren't 'saying it'; they're reporting what JCR have said.

I wouldn't believe them or trust them in anything.

I posted this very story in the horse racing thread yesterday ( in sport ) after hearing the story from At The Races

Let me clarify my point because I have made a pigs ear in making clear what I meant

What I meant was....

Of all the places to quote on this story The Sun was chosen. Could just be me but I absolutely loath that filthy rag.

Thanks Ginger Daddy, exactly. I don't dispute it was in other newspapers and arms of the media. If someone has a violent dislike of a particular paper that is of course his/her prerogative.

Plenty of people loathe The Sun, but they're simply reporting the same quotes from JCR, so it was just pointless nitpicking in this instance.

We discussed this same point in the Horse Racing Thread in Sport. I've been to Aintree on the Thursday and Saturday for as long as I can remember.

You went one year and it was great, and you are using that single experience to tell us there won't be a problem. However, it isn't always as you found it. I'd remember at least four or five occasions when the light and atmospheric conditions made it very difficult for spectators on course to see, more so than an hour before.

Obviously it could be a clear, sunny day, and it won't be a problem, the point I am making is that the risk of poor light increases considerably when moving it an hour at that time of year. That is something that won't be appreciated by TV viewers who are guaranteed a good enough picture. God only knows why they then want to run a race at 6:10.

Marcus Townend has reported that people don't stream out of the course after the main race. I can only assume he spends all day in the press hospitality tent. I can tell him that roughly a third of punters disappear after it and if he were walk to the West Tip stand for the final two races he'd have 4 of every 5 seats to choose from.

Final point on this, the stated reason for improving TV figures is nonsense. It is already Channel 4's biggest draw, so I don't see why this is a problem. The fact is that it is being moved to afford an extra hours drink and to put an end to the very issue Townend claims not to exist. The other fact is that if people want to watch it, they will.

It is a ridiculous move for numerous reasons.

Then why don't you write to tell the BHA and Channel 4 because it looks like they haven't done any research into it obviously

Personally I don't mind they've changed it and I'm willing to give it a try

It's actually a great move for TV purposes as it increases the chance of hundreds of thousands of football fans watching it.

I'm not sure it's a great move for paying punters, but that's purely because of the way they structure their day. Up at the crack of dawn, coach/train to Liverpool. It's a long day. But iof they can adapt it could work.

Punchestown has been starting at 4pm now for 3 or 4 years and has been a great success.

Personally you wouldn't get me near Aintree on National day, so the later time suits me.
