Well there's no way in actually knowing (apart from going down the bookies and asking people)

ITV needs 2 types of viewer to return. The regular Saturday afternoon lucky 15 punters and for the bigger events. The casual sports fan. Those who watch the big events in any sport.

ITV4 will broadcast a morning line style programme each Saturday.

I suspect itv1 will be used for afternoon meets during itv4s biggest sporting events, French open and tour de france, as well as the major meets.

French open middle weekend clashes with the Derby (I think)

I predicted last year ITV, now they no longer have European football, would splash out on a couple of big contracts. First it was rugby union, now it's all the major racing meetings from next year, and most of Channel 4's bread and butter fixtures. This is a welcome return to ITV for a sport which was the backbone of theirs sports coverage in the seventies and early eighties. It also means they can now put to bed their rotten game shows and little watched Saturday afternoon films for something that has a considerable following.

In general i think C4 will be happy to have F1 than horse racing. ITV would of been ambush with complaint's if they grabbed F1. Yes they get a few disgruntled viewers but the sport needs a higher profile channel especially for the GN, The Derby. Royal Ascot.

I can see ITV making a profit out of this but not sure about C4 with F1.

This year ( and I know we are talking 2017 ) the Derby is same day as ladies final in French Open ( last Saturday )

You say that Channel 4 would be pleased to have the F1 at the expense of the racing but really it is the end of an era for Channel 4. Personally i like their coverage, there are good presenters, interviewers and commentators. The issue channel 4 have had are with the pundits, McGrath and Cunningham are fairly useless and i personally struggle to understand what Mick Fitzgerald is saying most of the time.

However Holt and Hoiles are very good racing commentators. Nick Luck is an underrated presenter, when he started i found him to be duller than a cardboard box but the more i saw of him presenting it is clear to see he is a very good presenter, he is knowledgeable, articulate and very capable. ITV should take him on board as their presenter, it is unlikely that Balding will present on ITV and Luck would be a solid presenter.

What could be interesting is what deal the jockey club have done with itv over exclusivity and the ability to dictate, channel 4 had the rights to dictate over times etc over RUK and ATR so I would assume itv have been given the same rights, it will also be interesting it itv have exclusivity over tracks they won't be showing as of course s4c wanted to show Ffos Las and were told to get lost by C4 even though they don't show the course.

In the event of a clash i would imagine that ITV would momentarily switch from the tennis to air the derby and then return straight back to the tennis at the end of the race. This would only act as a 5 minute break from the tennis which should be fine. Maybe ITV would momentarily switch the tennis to ITV2/3 while the derby is on in order to make sure the tennis fans do not miss any of a match.

A 5 minute slot for the Derby?

Sadly the derby does not seem to be the race that it once was, the viewing figures have been falling year on year, even on the BBC it was falling. Therefore it is fair to predict that ITV will not give the race precedence over the tennis

It all depends on which production company ITV choose... as long as it is not IMG then things may change.
I wonder if ITV will take a gamble with Highflyer. if they still exist of course.

Luckily its unlikely to clash. Ladies final would start at 1pm and the Derby is getting later and later, think its 4.30 now and there has been talk of 5pm.

They want to get the Derby back where it should be. 10 minutes of TV coverage is not going to do that.

Worth noting that the ITV press release says this is a 4 year contract - so 2017 to 2020 inclusive.

As for The Derby I would be astonished if it isn't shown "properly" on ITV1 - ie the full afternoon (or at least the vast majority) of racing on ITV1 with the tennis on ITV4.

The tennis contract specifies that the two singles finals will be on ITV, but as has been said if the Derby starts at 4.30, the ladies final would likely be over by then.

Also, we don’t know if there even is a clash In 2017, as we don't have dates for either yet.

The derby will be the 1st Saturday in June.

Worth recalling that in 2014 ITV1 left the French Open Mens Singles Final to go to a news bulletin and the tennis switched to ITV4. So if there is such a clause in the contract it didn't count for much then.

The reality is that the racing contract is of far, far, far greater importance to ITV than the French Open tennis. The Derby is the flagship race of the entire flat season and it is inevitable it will be covered properly (including pre and post race) on ITV1.

That's all before we factor in that The Derby is a Category A Listed event.

I'm glad they are keeping a Morning Line. I think ITV will do ok. They've made mistakes in the past but if they play it right they will do well.
I reckon we could see the National going off at 5pm, and to be honest, why not!
i would just like ITV to grab Moto GP live now.

Tennis only really attracts attention during Wimbledon, which ITV will never get the rights to. Having all the big race meetings means ITV has a very lucrative contract that can fill their moribund afternoon slot and attract male viewers.

Would give a excuse to bump Tour De France and French Open to ITV actually.
