To be honest Glenn I'd have said the R&A would never leave the beeb.
After they sold to Sky I reckon Wimbledon is there for the taking now

Ever since the BBC stopped showing live TV coverage of horse racing the viewing figures for the Grand National have gone down.
Moving the National from Channel 4 to ITV 1 won't in my opinion solve this matter.
The only way to make the Grand National popular again is to show it in its rightful place on BBC 1.

The BBC hate racing, They rather show final score.

Prime time slot on ITV, race off around 7.30 in a show hosted by Ant and Dec with games and entertainment thrown in.

Ratings of 5 million for the show with the added bonus that some people see the racing.

I knows it's bonkers and is not going to happen but it seems to be the way the racecourses have got people in - live concerts on course etc.

You would have to imagine that Mick Fitzgerald will figure in the new coverage as well.”

Just been catching up on the news ITV have won the rights to Horse Racing over Channel 4 and no way am I surprised but wheather they can increase viewing figures remains to be seen.

I feel they will have to break away from the Channel 4 set up and don't make it Channel 4 racing on ITV if you see what I mean.

I agree with views on Clare Balding and I doubt she will present but who will is a good question, Nick Luck I doubt as well but do like the views on John Inverdale, a very solid presenter on most sports.

I would drop Simon Holt as well, there are many decent race callers out there who could easily lead the way, personally I would like to see Jon Hunt or Mark Johnson with a decent role.

Ones I certainly would drop Emma Spencer, Jim Magrath and Fitzgerald.

Just have the feeling ITV will go for Dettori and Mcoy as leading pundits and cant see why the ladies favourite Mike Cattermole couldn't get a recall either.

Don't forget there are other rights coming up too, the irish horse racing rights are up for grabs and ruk and atr will battle again this summer and next year a majority of the UK racecourse rights come up for grabs, so it might not just be Channel 4 who lose out, ATR need to keep the Irish and get Newcastle up and running and try and steal a few minor courses from RUK.

I hope ITV realise if they keep with the same coverage as C4 does the ratings will remain the same, too many now like Fitzgerald, Stevenson, Spencer etc being nothing to the programme.

It doesn't need thousands of presenters, a commentator, a betting show price man and a couple at most of presenters.

Watch Machin and Newsom on RUK at the jump meetings, that is the standard ITV should look for, not clowns like Persaud and Balding.

Not Machin please the man who should be employed as a cure for insomnia there's only one racing man worse than Machin and that's borefest Peter Naughton.

The Beeb were only interested in the cherry picked event meets but not the routine stuff. ITV will have something else to show in daytime its true, the stuff on ITV4 though might need a microscope to discover its audience rating. The National will continue to provide racings one true big audience tv event, it will be interesting to see if ITV can reverse the declining audience in general in recent years.

The other way around surely. Some matches at the French Open have only around 200k viewers on ITV.......the numbers watching the Derby would be many multiples of that.

Nonsense. ITV will show the Derby race day in full. The French Open women's final will be shown on ITV4 with some cross promotion on the main ITV channel. The Derby will fit well because: 1. More people will watch it and 2. They can fit in plenty of adverts for betting companies, which is largely what has attracted ITV to return to horse racing after a 31 year gap.

I wish people who know nothing about how TV works, how advertising and how sports rights work would stay off threads like this.

at least ITV got a year to pick these presenters so can take their time over this.

Ed is a no as he is committed to Sky football, can't see him switching to horse racing..

I doubt Clare Balding would move to ITV myself.

Another question would you want to see all five Classics on the main channel?

To have Ed Chamberlain on the list but not Nick Luck seems incredibly strange.

Some people arent that aware of ITV 4, even though the digital switchover has happened it doesnt mean that everyone is aware of the channels existence.

Why not? He's a big horse racing fan. You cannot rule him out just because it suits you.

I hadn't thought of him but he'd be a good alternative to Oli Bell if interested. Always rated Ed.

So much wrong with this I don't know where to start.

Last year's National brought in a peak of 8.8m viewers, an awful lot of people by any standard, which was actually up on the 8.5m recorded the previous year. So your assertion that the audience has declined every year since is incorrect.

And even on the Beeb it wasn't getting much more than that for the race itself. The National has actually been incredibly resilient considering it moved from BBC One to only the 2nd biggest commercial channel. In theory it should have lost a lot more viewers than it has done, but it's such a big event that it gets away with it.

By contrast major flat events like the Epsom Derby and Royal Ascot have definitely gone the wrong way, so it's those that need to be built back up again and ITV are well placed to help with that if they can get the tone of the coverage right.
