I wasn't meaning to be overly-critical. I thought she gave the horse a decent ride and I'm sure it was to orders, but even on first watching I felt she left it too late - Pasha was the last horse still on the bridle and was finishing quickest. For a jockey still in her first year of riding it was a super achievement, but if I'd had money on her I would have been a little annoyed.
I wouldn't, in these kind of races you are backing the jockey much more than the horse. Victoria could have been riding Don Cossack and would still have ridden the same race, you factor the jockey into the price you take.
Victoria in a match against Nina Carberry and gold cup winning jockey Sam Waley Cohen, the odds should be very long indeed.

I think it's generally accepted that the horse would be a non-stayer over this trip. As it turned out it was a very slowly run race and by lobbing along at the back the horse had something in reserve at the finish.

I think it finished as close as it ever could in this race because of the favourable way the race was run, pretty much regardless of who the jockey was

I'm sure Vicky was going to lob along at the back however the race panned out because getting round was her main priority but I think if the horse had been 'put in the race' much earlier I don't think it would have been running on at the finish, it would have been one of the faders that other horses were running past

First weekend of C4's Motor racing coverage and the racing schedule changes.
The big race is at 4.10 - Expect a summer of disruptions

Indeed. The final day of Royal Ascot is being bumped to More4 as it clashes with qualifying for the Azerbaijan GP (as mentioned a couple of pages back).

Sat next to Alice Plunkett on the train this morning all the way into London - C4 are filming in London today for their Grand National material. I know this because she was extremely irritating and spent a large part of the journey on the phone, turning the air blue in parts. Not good commuter etiquette!

Well in view of what's gone on in her life over the last few months, I'd cut her some slack!

First Saturday of channel 4's live F1 coverage this Saturday.

55 minutes of racing 2.05 - 3.00 (including the Lincoln)
But extra coverage on More 4.
Is More 4 available to everyone?

I think the national is horrible on Channel 4, when It was on the BBC it had a sense of class about it.

Channel 4 has come in for a lot of stick in the last 4 years but they've treated the national impeccably. They've risen its profile through media advertising and devote the whole day to it. Its a bit like cup final day in the 80's was

Really ? Moving the time to 5.15 to appease football fans over racing fans ? Nah, much preferred the BBC although I would take Simon Holt over Jim McGrath anyday.

Only saw one race today, the Foxhunters. Watched the race and the re-run afterwards with Hoiles, Fitz and Emma going through it. Awful. All 3 talking over each other, you couldn't make out what was being said. Very poor. I for one will be glad to see if go from 4 to ITV.

I like C4 coverage but always get annoyed when National comes around. They spend to much time focusing on the big race and always say about which jockey will be riding what in the national race even 2 days before "Ruby Walsh riding Annie Power here, will be on board x in the national" I know it is the big race but just winds me up every year. BBC used to be the same. I know something little but is my bug bear.

I thought the race commentary on the Foxhunters was bizarre, they had 3 race commentators with no mention of over to the next commentator and it was only a 2.5m race that took under 6 mins.

Yes that is tiresome after a while, they even tell you jockey X hasn't got a rid in the National.

I agree.........BBC do sport very well including the Grand National.Royal Ascot also used to be much better on the beeb.

Even the tracks that the BBC used to cover look different on C4 and not as 'good'.Ascot would be a good example of that.

C4 do ok and some of the presenters are excellent ( Luck and Cunningham) others are terrible ( Fitzgerald talks in total lazy clichés) but BBC coverage generates more of a sense of occaision somehow.

Claire Balding was better covering the racing when she was on the BBC but since she went to C4 and probably more because she has hit the big time she isn't as good to me.

Quick question about horse racing commentators - are Stewart Machin, Mark Johnson and Alan Howes Racing UK's commentators on the Grand National Festival?

I've been listening to talkSPORT 2's live coverage from the Festival, which is sponsored by Racing UK, and they've been taking commentaries with the above trio being credited. From looking over old threads, the three have been the on-course commentators at Aintree in previous years so I guess Racing UK (and thus talkSPORT 2) are taking this feed.

Commentary on The Grand National itself will be on the main talkSPORT tomorrow - the third successive year the race has been on national commercial radio as well as the BBC - with Rupert Bell and Lee McKenzie due to produce their own commentary on it. The 5.15pm start is ideal for sports radio as it means they'll be able to fit the race between their coverage of the 3pm and 5.30pm football kick-offs.

Its not to appease football fans. Its to gain maximum exposure.
In 2016 they've realised that people do stuff on Saturday afternoons.
Just like the cup final has it will work perfectly.

Wonder if tomorrow will be the last we hear of Simon Holt on the National or just wonder if he will be part of ITV's coverage.

It is. In Ireland they can watch Premier League football games without the blackout, the National starting after they finish is not due to co-incidence.

You say it will work perfectly, I will wait to see the viewing figures first.

Sounds right, Johnson is definitely one of them

They're the key words. In Ireland, the Irish Derby and the feature race on each day of the Punchestown festival are run at teatime.

Will be very surprised if Holt is not part of the ITV racing team from next year. When a sport leaves one TV network for another, the main commentator or pundit for that sport, moves across as well. When BBC lost the TV rights to cricket to Channel 4 in 1999, Richie Benaud (RIP) went to C4 as well (especially as he said he was a "free-to-air" man) and for Formula 1, Murray Walker moved to ITV when the Beeb lost that contract at the end of 1996 and when they wrested it back, Martin Brundle - who was Walker's co-commentator as well as his replacement James Allen - moved with it.

I was at Aintree today and it was those three doing the course commentary. Very good commentary as well.

There was a nice touch before the race over the National fences, when they talked us punters through the sequence of jumps and explained where the three commentators were and who would be commentating on which obstacles. I was a little surprised that Alan Howes was the grandstand commentator, as I thought he was the least high-profile of the three callers.
