I am a horse racing fan but had the Grand National not being on on the day I went I wouldn't have spent a fortune going to and from Liverpool to watch a normal Saturday at Aintree.

Best day out I ever had was at The Grand National a few years back - terrific atmosphere huge crowds and very friendly Liverpool people and the way the stewards get thousands onto the trains within minutes is amazing

You get 3 grade 1's, 2 really competitive handicaps and then the climax, the biggest betting race of the season. All in 3 3/4 hours.

My dad has just returned from his first ever visit to Aintree. Sadly he didn't like it. Too wet, far too busy and he didn't back a winner. He said he was ready for off by 5.00 and the main event hadn't even started. He's looking forward to Beverley on Wednesday instead now

Sean Boyce on ATR has said viewing figures were 10 million +.
Can't see any confirmation of that other than that was the hoped for figure.
Very interesting discussion on moving the race time and other aspects of the modern national on this mornings Sunday forum.

Unfortunately for paying spectators to ANY UK event, you can't control the weather. At least low sun wasn't an issue

I think 5.15 is far too late. Remember you have been in there around 5 hours or so by that point. When you go to a race meeting the main event is usually 3rd or 4th race, not 6th. Plus at Aintree you cant turn up 10 minutes before the first race like at most day to day meetings, you need to be there a lot earlier as it is so busy. I am glad I have been but I don't think I would go back, Cheltenham on the other hand, wow, wish I could afford to go.

I go to Cheltenham every year. Usually Gold Cup day. 70,000 people, I normally arrive between 12.30 & 1 as I like to enjoy the atmosphere in the town. I find it a shame that the Gold cup is race 4 as the races after that feel (and are) an anti climax.
What other sporting events peak in the middle?

I know we are off-topic (for which I apologise) but my days of going to the Cheltenham Festival are in the past. It became too crowded and corporate-minded for my taste (although judging from my visits to Cheltenham in November and January the course has been redeveloped very well). I now concentrate during the NH season on Punchestown which is a thoroughly enjoyable few days.

A really good Grand National meeting with a lot of top class horses running, great racing and pretty good coverage by C4 for their last one, the only minor niggle was Balding turning up.

Yeah not sure starting the race at 5:15 was that great an idea really like Darren says it's a long wait for the spectators in attendance.

If you're going to put the race back an hour I'd suggest putting the whole card back an hour so the national is still at the same point on the card, there's enough daylight now to run the last couple of races at 6-6:30.

We'll see what ITV want to do with it next year.

I thought Simon Holt was outstanding yesterday, not just the National but the under card too. Some great lines he came out with.

Fantastic ratings for yesterday's National on Channel 4 and a nice way to end their last year covering the National.

I thought the Channel 4 team were fantastic- Alice Plunkett, Nick Luck, AP McCoy and Mick Fitzgerald provided excellent, informative and interesting analysis. The slow-motion rerun of the race with Nick, AP and Mick was brilliant punditry. Those guys really do know what they're talking about.

Simon Holt is now an established legend of horse racing commentary and he called this one perfectly. Richard Hoiles and Ian Bartlett were also excellent.

Well done Channel 4!

Similar to Cricket in 2005 when C4 got its best ever viewing figures for that summer's Ashes series, after it was announced that it would cease covering the sport at the end of that summer.

In both cases the words "horse" and "stable door" spring to mind...

Charles sale (so maybe a pinch of salt) reporting on a later start to national day next year

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/rac...n-viewers.html

Viewing figures up 1.1 million on last year and the third highest ever viewing figures in 4's history.

Dramatic Scottish grand national. C4 talking up the trainers title and then fail to interview Paul Nichols. Poor

They did, but only briefly due to time constraints.

Only probably with starting the GRand National later is the prospet of low sun meaning lots of fences get missed out.

Now, that woould destroy the spectacle of the race.

Channel 4 have been talking up the trainers title for weeks now.
If its still in the balance after the Whitbread I wonder if they'll continue on More 4...

Per article in today's Times re ITV's coverage:

- Announcement re presenters will be before the Euros (June 10)
- Three "frontline" presenters to share duties across the 94 days each year
- Over 60 people interviewed across all roles (ie including pundits, betting etc)
- High degree of knowledge is a must
- Frontrunners for main presenter are Pougatch, Balding, Luck, Oli Bell, Ed Chamberlin and Inverdale
- Jeremy Kyle can be discounted
- Coverage will be produced in-house by ITV Productions

Thanks.

Thank god Kyle, Ant and Dec and other 'celebs' that have been mentioned in past are no longer in the running.

I know Inverdale has done some racing for BBC radio but what about Pougatch? A very good football presenter (in short time he gets when covering ITV games) but does he have any racing experience?

I know he's marmite but I think Matt Chapman has really upped his game lately, yesterday's Sunday forum being an example (a 2 hour discussion involving Nick Rust) asking all the right questions and really getting some interesting stuff out of him.
He has a rapport with the punters and his on the line show can be a hoot.
I hope he gets the gig, probably as the man in the ring.

Another ATR man to consider is Gary O Brien, his knowledge of Irish racing his huge and he should be considered for Cheltenham/Aintree/Royal ascot etc.. Please no more of the awful Brian Gleeson.

If ITV go the same route as Channel 4 then they may as well keep it there. 4 isnt working because it is aimed at the hardcore racing fan and the casual punter is cast aside. That is my opinion and, judging by the ratings slump it has had, many others. I don't get this obsession with getting in ATR or RUK men. I would wager the main man/woman is somebody more than just the racing fraternity know.
