Can't say that I'm that bothered who the commentator is......I watch racing most days on ATR/RUK and there's loads of commentators. Most of the time I don't even know who it is

They're all much of a muchness

They say who's slowly away, they say who's making the running, they go through the field identifying the horses by colour, silks etc then they tell you who's making a move and the finishing order on the line

They all commentate pretty much the same........there is a standard format !

I'm not keen on Des Scahill who does things differently.......he just appears to run through the field in order then when he's got to the one at the back he goes back to the front and does it again............ and again. But obviously he's not going to get the gig

Also not keen on Thommo ...........maybe because he is, or he considers himself to be, a 'big' personality and attempts to 'personalise' the commentary with banging on about 'the jolly' and having his own catchphrases like ......'and here comes the favourite' as the favourite moves from 10th to 8th being driven like his life depended on it and obviously at the end of his tether.

Apart from those two any of the others would do........

The other commentator on Irish racing (Peter O'Hehir ?) is even more of a nightmare that Dessie. Absolute silence until the off, a run-through of the horses usually omitting half of them, missing entirely any events during the race, even if Ruby falls off he mentions it like he's ready a shopping list, then manic wheezing and screaming for the last furlong.

I thought someone's comment on the last page of the thread re Hayley was a bit unfair. Granted it's early days for her and she needs much more experience before being thrown to the ITV wolves, but she does well in the afternoon sessions with Sir Bob (who can't be the easiest to work with, like a bumbling old grandad trying to use technology) and you get quite a lot of inside stuff from her that the usual pundits / co-presenters either don't know or don't bother with.
I always remember Sue Barker in her early days on Sky, she was worse that useless to start with, but grew with the experience.

Still, much like you swing, I watch ATR and RUK, so it doesn't bother me who's on C4 or ITV and I wouldn't my Tanya Stevenson from my Emma Spencer - though Lydia Hislop on RUK is very good.

Irish racing generally has four commentators. Robert Pugh (was usually Northern Ireland but recently has been commentating on RTE Radio), Peter O'Hehir, Jerry Hannon and, of course, Dessie Scahill. Add to that RTE tv's commentator Tony O'Hehir.

Mick Fitzgerald has been added to the ITV team.........

Not a big fan really. He's OK when he's in the studio discussing racing in general but I don't think he's much kop at racecourse presenting........tends to big up the favourite in every race and every horse is 'a nice type'

He's also one of those that bigs up a trainer in form - because they had a winner today even if they are only running at 1% for the last month. Drives me mad, that does.

Little surprised by that, i would of thought one of the greatest jockeys who has a great insight into the sport would of been high on the list for ITV even if just for NH fixtures.

I've always got the impression he isn't comfortable and does the bare minimum
From memory he didn't do all 4 days at Cheltenham?

ITV will do what they do with EVERY sport bar football, fail to increase the ratings and shove it onto ITV4 before the contract expires

I'm struggling to think of any sports contract that was moved from ITV to ITV4, and then dumped.

The network has broadcast quite a few sports over the years after taking the contract (in most cases) from the BBC then dumped the sport Suppose now there is an x head of BBC sport running ITV sport the sport itself may survive

Snooker, Ice Skating, Gymnastics, F1. Athletics. Boxing

They still show some events on ITV4.

I'd guess they cannot do that. The contract was signed with the premise that 34 days were shown on ITV1. The national, the classics , Cheltenham , Ascot etc.
They'd be in breach.

Specifically which of those was shunted to ITV4 and then dumped?
Because you claimed they do that with every sport.

I'm just looking for one example of a sport contract that ITV shunted to ITV4 and then dumped.

Simple awnser.....there isn't!

Like Neil said above they would be in serious breach of contract if the thought ever crossed their mind, just won't happen.

Nothing stopping ITV trying to renegotiate the terms of the contract after a year or so. Wouldnt be unheard of in TV land to get a sports broadcasting contract changed partway through it

ITV dumped Athletics, ice skating, gymnastics, boxing.

I will rephrase my comment they may well not have been shunted to ITV4 but they were most certainly dumped. Hopefully that will meet with your question. If not I truly apologise for making such a wild accusation

There isn't and it wouldn't surprise me if it isn't a success unfortunately.
But why invest in the rights to Cheltenham, Aintree, Epsom & Royal Ascot and the huge betting ads that will come with them and not push them for as long as possible?

.
A Dessie special apart from messing up a finish is his straighten up for the approach that will bring them right across the entrance before the straight, every race that happens and I've still never seen an approach right across the entrance in any race

You said it!, there is no chance on earth ITV will want to try and switch any of those away to ITV 4, not going to happen, end of any possible discussion.

You get the impression that the majority of the members of C4 Racing are big fans of Nick Luck and feel that he should have got a role on ITV. He isnt a bad presenter and has improved since he first started but he will only really be on Racing UK and i assume will still be doing a bit of work for NBC.
