Not that new, she's been around for ages.

But yeah, she's very good at the studio based stuff. I think she needs a bit more experience of on course presenting before she'd be ready for a step up to ITV.

Following the death of James Hunt, the BBC could have had reigning F1 World Champion Nigel Mansell as their F1 co-commentator.

Instead they went for Jonathan Palmer and then Martin Brundle, who between them had no wins and one podium finish.

They did this because Mansell is a terrible pundit.

McCoy is the same... it doesn't matter how much you have won, if you are terrible on TV and make watching an uncomfortable experience, then you shouldn't be on TV.

Absolutely. Greatest ever jockey without doubt but he lacks charisma on the TV and comes across as dour and as if he would rather be somewhere else. For all the criticism Mick Fitz gets he adds enthusiasm and chats well with the jockeys and trainers

QFT. This is why David Feherty has a high profile broadcasting job and (for example) Sandy Lyle doesn't.

In similar vein I can't understand why the Golf Channel in the US use Faldo or has he lightened up and become more engaging in retirement ?

Is like cricket always using ex players and Sky having this desire to use any former England captain some of whom are dire presenting or commentating on TV.

Very biased Channel 4 were with mentioning Cue Card 35 times in the 5 minutes before the Charlie Hall Chase and then after the race getting mentioned 8 times in 2 minutes. Irish Cavalier hardly got a mention.

Does Graham Cunningham ever say anything relevant?

What happened to the days where each horse would get a mention when going through the racecard?

Alice Plunkett was very quiet after Cue Card lost. Yes he's her favourite and biased there.

Wonder if this is a sneaky move by C4 to make ITV think they shouldn't cover any race with Cue Card in as it's too associated with the previous brand!

Lee Mottershead from The Racing Post was fairly interesting.

The gist was that from racing's point of view they would have to get a substantial increase of viewers to judge it a success. ITV gets a much bigger audience all round than C4 so if racing only gets the same audience on ITV that it did on C4 then it shows that normal ITV viewers are turning off when racing comes on and that wouldn't be good news

And from ITVs point of view it's all about Bookie Adverts.......they think they can make a lot of money from bookie adverts during the racing shows. With a bigger base audience than C4 they can charge more for advertising space as long as the ITV audience doesn't turn over when racing comes on

The fly in the ointment is the Government thinking about banning daytime advertising of betting........that would kill ITV coverage stone dead

Thanks. That's quite interesting.

I note from BARB that the Grand National coverage got 4.7m viewers, but it doesn't look like Racing generally breaks the 1.5m mark - even Cheltenham didn't break the C4 top ten (not sure if that's a surprise or not, given that it is a weekday event).

What sort of audience would ITV be looking to attract, I wonder.

And what about on ITV4, where programming currently seems to top out at around 0.5m?

I don't think it would. I happened across the Greyhound Racing channel the other night and they were discussing this very point as a viewer had asked how they would be affected if it came in.

The gist of the reply was that whilst free-standing ads before the watershed might be banned, ads relating to a sports event being broadcast at that time on that channel would still be ok.

Awful few days with the deaths of the brilliant Vautour and Simonsig and the retirement of Sprinter Sacre. Fantastic pieces put together at the open meeting remembering the good times for Vautour and Sacre. Made me realise how much I am going to miss Simon Holt when coverage moves to ITV. I know said it before but for me up there with best commentator on any sport.

It's worth remembering that the person responsible for dropping Holt was the same one who pushed Barry Davies out of Match of the Day some years ago

Crazy fool.

Some of Holt's commentaries are spine tingling.
