I THINK it is because champions day used to be at Newmarket which is a RUK track and they must have had a deal in place.

I know it happened before when a meeting got called off. Was due to be on RUK but then switched to a ATR but RUK still showed it as well. Or could have been other way round.

Champions day was allocated to both ATR and Racing UK last year dont know if arrangement is for longer than that.

From Channel 4

Having already secured acclaimed sports broadcaster, Clare Balding, as lead presenter of Channel 4 Racing, the channel today announces its complete horseracing line-up.

Experienced racing broadcaster, Nick Luck, will take on a key presenter role, supporting Clare Balding on all the sports premium events from 1st January 2013. These include Cheltenham Festival, Aintree's three-day John Smith's Grand National meeting, the Investec Derby Festival from Epsom Downs, Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and the QIPCO British Champions Day. Nick will independently lead Channel 4 Racing's weekly Saturday afternoon programmes.

Celebrating his newly appointed position, Nick says: "I would like to thank Channel 4 and IMG for what is an incredibly exciting opportunity. Together, they have some fantastic and dynamic ideas to drive the sport forward and I very much look forward to being part of the new team."

Clare and Nick will be joined by horseracing specialists, reporters Alice Plunkett and Emma Spencer with Rishi Persad also re-joining the channel. The trio will be responsible for trackside interviews with jockeys, trainers and winning connections, and will have a strong presence across traditional Saturday meetings for both jump and flat racing.

In-depth race analysis will be provided by the formidable Jim McGrath with new recruits Graham Cunningham and former top jump jockey Mick Fitzgerald.

Simon Holt will deliver race commentary supported by Richard Hoiles.

Betting will continue to have a significant presence and Tanya Stevenson will relay the market movers and exchanges.

Channel 4's Saturday Morning Line show will continue with Nick Luck at the helm and Alice Plunkett stepping in as an alternative front presenter. The show, live on-course from 7:55am provides racing enthusiasts with tales from the turf, racing updates and the latest betting news.

In time, further key names will be added to the core presenting team, which will be supported by a number of new talent that include attheraces presenter, Gina Bryce, and jump jockey Sam Thomas - the latter already familiar to Channel 4's audience through his Dark Horse Morning Line series.

The refreshed Channel 4 Racing team will present their first show live from Cheltenham Racecourse on Tuesday, January 1 2013 produced by IMG Sports Media. Carl Hicks, the former BBC Sport Senior Programme Editor, will be the Executive Producer of Channel 4 Racing with a team of horseracing and creative experts.

From 2013, Channel 4 Racing will be the new home of horseracing broadcasting 88 days a year and showing nearly 300 hours of live action.

Jamie Aitchison, Channel 4's Sports Editor, says:

"Being the new home of horseracing is a real privilege and I'm delighted to announce this carefully selected team of presenters and reporters; a mix of broadcasting heavyweights and racing experts.

"Sports fans have something to look forward to - our racing coverage will be insightful, intelligent and ground-breaking. I'm hugely excited about the future of racing on Channel 4 and greatly look forward to 2013."

"I would like to thank all of the presenting team for their commitment and enthusiasm to Channel 4 and the racing coverage over the years."

Now I am guessing its the Jim McGrath already on 4 but no Thommo ??? It was expected John Francome would leave but no Thommo OR Fat Al. Come on Channel 4

No mention of John MiCririck . So I guess he must be leaving.

I guess they will not be using course commentary for the "second" meeting then.
A shame if Al isn't involved, though I think the Racing Post keeps him busy

a link to the RP website confirms that big mac is out along with francome and shockingly alistair down, I am particulary shocked by that

while John McCririck, Derek Thompson, John Francome, Mike Cattermole and Racing Post feature writer Alastair Down will no longer feature.

Alistair Down, I'm not a fan of. I thought McCririck is staying on for the 'big meetings'. Shame Thomo isn't in.

For the standard Saturdays if they are at two courses, Hoiles will be the '2nd comm' rather than using the course comm.

I agree with you Darren, the lack of Alastair Down and Derek Thompson is particularly disappointing.

Without wanting to sound too patronising they both had a very strong link to the general punter or horse racing fan, Thommo with his interviews and Alastair with his monologue, something that would have been right at home on Grand National Day.

Judging by the C4 twitter feed it is the Jim McGrath who is currently on Channel 4.

I don't think it means Richard Holies will be at every second meet on a Saturday, more that he will be the main co-comm on days when Simon Holt is off. I imagine we will still hear the racecourse comm on some race meetings.

I wonder if Graham Cunningham will be main the replacement for John Francome. It's a shame to lose him but he had said from the outset that he wanted to focus more on the stables he owns.

Glad 'Thommo' wont be on, bit annoying imo regardless of his expience generally and how closely involved he was in the Shergar saga.

Alistair Down is a loss and maybe even Francome.

It's going to be a bit strange having no BBC coverage but I would have like to have seen the races that were covered on BBC - predominately Aintree, have the same personnel on C4 mainly the Aussie Jim McGrath commentating on that.

Oh no, Jim McGrath is a shocking commentator. He is way past his best now. Simon Holt reigns supreme in the horse racing commentary stakes

Wouldn't say Aussie Jim is or was shocking. Deffo now time for Holt to get all the main races though. In terms of commentary only guy missing as a #2 / additional comm is Ian Bartlett. He is a brilliant commentator and was good on the analysis on the TV after races on the BBC.

It's more a single voice you associate with a particular race for me.

It was always Sir Peter O'Sullevan on the national then Jim McGrath after that.

Used to hearing Simon Holt at Cheltenham obv. but it's going to be a bit of an adjustment hearing a different voice on the national.

I know we've mentioned this before but it'll be interesting to see how the racing broadcast landscape changes because of this deal.

With Simon Holt covering Royal Ascot, that'll mean they'll need someone else to do racecourse commentary (possibly two people if Richard Holies is working for Channel 4) It'll be interesting to see if people like Jim McGrath get the job or whether they'll look to younger callers.

And with Nick Luck taking on a more prominent role that'll mean Racing UK will need someone to step up. I imagine Lydia Hislop may cover more of the big race days, but that in turn will leave gaps to be filled.I wonder if Alastair Down may also be looked to for a role there.

McGrath wasn't going to do it forever, so Holt is the 'next voice'...

Ok shocking is a bit strong but he is a poor relation to many now. I could name 10 horse racing commentators better than him. He isn't as good as he was, he makes too many errors.

I feel bad for Jim in many ways. He used to be excellent but started to lose his way a bit when the BBC started shelving meetings and he had big gaps in between the meetings he covered

He'd stopped doing on-course commentary because of his initial BBC commitments and admitted when he went back to it that he needed to because he was out of practise and it was starting to affect the races he called

He was still working for ATR but mainly as a pundit. Yesterday he was the on course commentator at Lingfield for an AW meet

He started doing course comms again a couple of years ago, I think around the time the Beeb started to give away a couple of the jumps meeting at Haydock/Newbury

No mention for Stewart Machin, Tom Lees or Lesley Graham either. Although the press release says 'In time, further key names will be added to the core presenting team.' The betting team certainly looks a bit thin at the moment.

In the Media Guardian John McCririck is very outspoken about not having his contract renewed with Channel 4.

It was reported in the Racing Post last week that Lesley Graham has a new job in racing, starting in the new year (can't remember exactly what it was).
