I don't think we will see many of these anymore. Unless the song is a massive hit It won't have the staying power.

Take Queen for example The Show Must Go On only reached number 16 but is still played on radio and is a very well known Queen track. Same with Who Want's To Live Forever, that only reached no 24. These songs are probably better known than an actual number 1 Queen had Innuendo.

Abba are another band Thank you For The Music only reached number 33 but is one of Abba's most well known songs.

I only found that out the other week. I looked up Dolly's Wikipedia discography after watching one of her films and couldn't believe it never made the top 10 here in the UK.

None of the singles from Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" broke the UK top 20 and they're amongst their most well known.

Steps - 5, 6, 7, 8! This only peaked at 14 in the UK - their only song to miss the top 10! I remember hearing somewhere that it still remains one of the biggest selling singles to have missed the top ten...

In a UK aspect, Tina Turner - Proud Mary. Only got to #62. People probably don't even realise it's a CCR song

I'd say Tragedy was their most memorable song (even though it's a cover).

Thank You For The Music wasn't intended as a single though. It was originally from a 1977 album and ony released iat the end of 1983 a year after they had (effectlvely) split up.

She's Gone by Daryl Hall & John Oats. A wonderful classic that still gets a lot of radio play on oldies stations but never charted in the UK and only got to no. 60 in the US.

I had to just check because I still can't believe it. Even a cover version by Tavares only got to no. 50.

The Hall & Oates version of 'She's gone' limped to #42 in late October 1976.

One of lifes mysteries I'm afraid.Though when the song peaked at #22 there was a 'specific chart-battle' going on between 2 of the biggest Brit-pop bands at the time...

As far as i'm aware none of these made the top 40 in their original form.

Barry Manilow - Copacabana
Commitments - Mustang Sally
Contours - Do You Love Me
Doobie Brothers - Long Train Running
Etta James - At Last
Gipsy Kings - Bamboleo
Johnny Cash - Ring Of Fire
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
Meatloaf - Paradise By The Dashboard Light
Rick James - Superfreak
Sir Mix-A-Lot - Baby Got Back

as mentioned Brown Eyed Girl and Summer Of 69 are probably the 2 that get played at mobile disco's the most that didn't hit the top 40

Etta James - At Last made the top 40 this year at #39 after her death.

Shirley Bassey is an interesting case. A lot of the songs she's remembered for didn't reach high in the charts.

Goldfinger #21
Big Spender #21
Diamonds Are Forever #38

But she actually had quite a few top ten hits, and a lot of them aren't as well remembered these days. Technically she had three songs which got to number one, but I'd imagine if you ask people to name them they'd probably say those three rather than the songs that did get to number one. (Which were As I Love You and the double a-side Reach For The Stars/Climb Ev'ry Mountain if you're wondering).

Don't Stop Believing famously didn't get very high in the UK charts, but it has been played on radio and disco's for years. The Sopranos and Glee eventually made it get top10 though.
