What brands of 'American chocolate' are available in the UK? I've never eaten any but my curiosity is now peaked as there's been a few DS threads on the subject over the years.

You can get Reese bars quite easily now.

When I left the US, 17 years or so ago, someone asked me what I would miss:
"Only Conan O'Brien and Reeses" was the answer. Well, we still don't have the brilliant Conan but we do have Reeses.

They are atypical of the US chocolate I had - most of which tastes like a cross between Bob Martin's doggy chocs and generic supermarket brand cooking chocolate. Reeses are edible.

One of our managers from the US sent us some chocolate once. It was part of a thank you from a customer. The guy has a sense of humour - half the chocolates were eaten because they were handed round at a meeting and he felt we'd missed out because we had to phone in. I can't comment on the taste though because they were Belgian chocolates

I can get Cadbury's on import here, but it comes from Australia and isn't the same

I'm getting more used to different types of chocolate though. I think that's half the challenge.

That said, UK chocolate isn't all that great either, I usually go for dark chocolate like Divine or Hotel Chocolate bars- but Lordy lord! Have you tried a 'Bournville' bar? Nasty, powdery, mouth full of sugar rubbish!”

Yes, Cadbury's/Bournville is gotty stuff too, and Galaxy is sickly.

Both American-owned now.

What? Smarites in the USA are not the same as Nestle's chocolatey Smarties in the UK. They're just fruit flavored dextrose like your Fizzers.

It's awful isn't it and has such a horrible, bitter after taste. The peanut butter Hershey's isn't as bad but that's probably because it disguises the taste of the chocolate itself.

Try some of the smaller companies chocolate if in the States. The Hershey's stuff is vile, I agree with the poster who said it tastes like a cross between cooking chocolate and doggie chocs, but there are some decent ones.

When I was in Vegas I went to the Ethel M chocolate factory. Their chocolates were delicious, very European in style and taste. The range reminded me a lot of Thornton's here in the UK. Ethel M are owned by Mars, but their chocolates are much better than the US mainstream Mars chocolate.

Not only does it taste horrid, it affects you work environment.”

How many offices does your cat sanctuary have?

Lovely people, horrible chocolate. It makes no sense to me.

Hershey bars? What the hell is that all about”

Unlike you I can't say I've travelled all over the world. but I've noticed that people are nicer to tourists than they are to locals. The other thing about travelling is that chocolate is different everywhere you go. I don't know this from eating chocolate all over the world, but from this excellent blog article, being an American's insight into Cadbury's:
