Yeah, granted, that one's a bit manky. Cupuaçu is becoming more and more popular here and chocolate made from it is waaaay better than chocolate using cocoa beans.

Most artisan-produced chocolate comes from the United States these days. Even in Belgium, there are very few independent chocolatiers who make their own couverture and work in small batches. Trying to make out that all American chocolate is like Hershey's is a bit annoying, and a pretty poor attempt at snobbery. If anyone is truly interested in experiencing what chocolate is supposed to taste like, why would you ever bother with something mass-produced, whether it be Reese's or Cadbury?

Are you talking Ben & Jerry's or local/regional ice cream vendors? We have Graeter's here in Ohio and they're pretty much amazing.

All in all I'm an American who loves Hershey Kisses and Hug's, and I buy Mini's, and usually have the big bottle of Hershey's syrup to make chocolate milk or put on vanilla ice cream, lol.

I've been there too. They also have a lovely cacti garden all lit up at night.

Reese's peanut butter cups are quite nice, and Hershey's cookies & cream bars are not bad either, although it's a good 15-20 yrs since I tasted the latter, so they've probably changed the recipe since.

Whenever my sister comes home from America, she fills her case with British sweets and chocolates. her American family love them. Apparently they can drive up to Canada to get British foodstuff.

We're only a small place but we once won an award for having the tastiest products, beating Cadbury's, Rowntrees and other big names.

We supply most of the major supermarkets with our chocolate covered raisins, brazils, peanuts, caramels, honeycomb & mini eggs and Aldi will start showing a Compare ad soon with our mini eggs, under the Aldi brand, being compared to Cadbury's.

We used to supply Nestle with beans, we couldn't call them Smarties, mini eggs and white chocolate products, but they moved their operations to the Czech Republic.Nestle's 'Moments' was a huge order and I'm sure they're still available in supermarkets.

We're so busy that our factory is going to be running through Easter, even on Easter Sunday!

The only chocolate bar that I've tasted in the US that I really liked was their version of Kit-Kat.The rest were too bitter for my taste.

I hate Hershey's but I adore Reese's. They really need to bring Reese's peanut butter cookies over to the UK!

My boss gave me some kitkat he had bought in the US the other day and it was awful. Definitely not the same as over here. Mind you I only like the dark chocolate kitkats.

Were they imports?

These are smarties in the US. They look a bit like refreshers or perhaps fizzers.

They're made by a company founded by someone whose family made fizzers over here, went over there and sold them as smarties. They own smarties.com to prove it.

So the OP says Americans are the most friendly, I won't get into a debate about that except to say Americans are almost certainly the most misleading .

I hate Hershleys chocolate. When I went to NYC I brought over loads and I mean loads of chocolate over to the girls, they were more excited to see that than me!!! We ended up freezing some of it to make it last!!

The fire safety officer where I work is a bit of a patronising soul and he always inflicts Tootsie Rolls on the people who get the questons in his fire lecture quizzes right. I've made the mistake of eating a couple and on balance, I think I'd rather catch fire.

Hershey bars? What the hell is that all about”

Different culture = different foods and tastes.

Cocoa/chocolate is naturally bitter in taste, same with coffee. Americans tend to acquire a likeness to those natural flavors.

Ahh but don't worry the Atlantic Ocean is spreading at the rate of 1 inch per year so physically we're moving further away.

I'd really love to see a brit's reaction to Ibarra if they think Hersheys is "too bitter".

It's designed to be crushed into hot milk and mixed with chili peppers. It's very bitter. Like coffee.

Chocolate loses a lot of its flavor if it's oversweetened like european chocolate. Anyone who's had a mole sauce could tell you that the typical chocolate bar is bland in comparison.

That's not to say Hersheys is good chocolate.. it's mass-produced, waxy crap.. but its bitterness isn't the problem.
