I just don't get the fuss with this guy and can't believe he's had consecutive weeks at No1. He's sold over 500,000 copies of his single and already shaping up to be one of the biggest hits of the year. What's the attraction with the bloke and this song? The songs ok but nothing particularly special. I don't get it.

He is a fantastic artist, and it is about time he gets the recognition he deserves. The song is beautiful.

But his real talent shines on his Making Mirrors album...(i have yet to review it) there is a real blend of Indie/Acoustic stuff, Some Euphoic Electronic blends, and some very trippy elements. It is a very mighty feel good record.

But music is subjective of course and he wont be to everyones taste, i am just glad tht he has had a long run at number 1 and that he really is in the spotlight...something very old skool about him.

I advise to check out more of his stuff...may check out his previous album too

The song is catchy, different, original and alternative and I think people actually like these sort of 'odd songs' that come out once in a while that aren't your generic dance tracks.

The song is just an amazing pop song!!! There's all this technopop around at the moment. I think the public are just starting to look for different things now. Gotye's song is extremely catchy. Reminds me a bit of Timbaland's songs.

Well obviously many, many people don't agree with this notion. I think it's an amazing song and it was my favourite of last year.

It's certainly not a pop song.

Apart from the one track I don't see the fuss either.

Think he will be a one hit wonder.

I have just got back from Switzerland and it is being played to death on the radio there!
I do like the song but it does remind me a little of XTC's "Senses Working Overtime"

Exactly what i'm thinking. Wonder what his follow-up song will be and if it will sound the same.

The only reason he is doing well is because of the much better cover version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9NF2edxy-M

The song is very successful because it bridges the generation gap, something which songs used to do a lot but now hardly ever do.

That makes its audience significantly larger with correspondingly larger and longer sales.

Never heard it before and never heard of the group but its good.
The op should realise that just because HE doesnt like it others WILL. It is one of those songs that on first few hearings is rubbish but it grows and grows and now I really like it. It will be this years Umbrella or Crazy.

Yeah I agree - his new album is really good. Very eclectic record with many different styles covered. It's a really solid and imaginative pop album, and even those who don't like the lead single could find plenty to like

There are melodic similarities.

I thought SIUTK was crap when I heard it for the first time, about 3 months ago.It took me about 4 listens to appreciate the song more. It's a darn sight more listenable (to me) than nearly every other song in the Top 20 !
It's a song that is appreciated more if you're relaxed & in the right frame of mind to listen to the words and 'soak it all in'.

(I did track down a bootleg remix of 'Somebody That I Used To Know' which samples 'Children' by Robert Miles.

What a strange reason to start a thread. I don't like lots of the music in the chart but I don't sit around wondering why other people do.

The funny thing is i find SOmebody I Used To Know to be the more "fillery" song of the album....it does stick out a bit....its like he has sewn a massive canvas....but that it the seam sticking out of it lol.

But the album is so brilliant, i do hope more check Making Mirrors out! So glad i bought it!

Well if his efforts fail, there will always be the gap for him to be a Sting impersonator.

Yeah I agree somewhat. I do like the song, though I wouldn't say I 'love' it, but it piqued my curiosity enough to give the album a try, and I'm very glad that I did.
