Cass Elliot's vocal range supposedly altered when she was accidentally hit on the head by a refrigerator coil thrown by someone on a nearby building site.

Agreed, it was pretty juvenile. And lacking in knowledge, as others have pointed out.

Likewise! They used a lot of her music here & there IIRC. I think there was another of hers playing when Michael was trying to kill himself off-island. But as Lost scenes go, obviously the bunker one is more legendary

I guess someone on the show must have been a fan!

Oh I remember the mamas and papas. The Abba of their time. Cass (and Karen Carpenter ) had amazing voices.

Another fabulous female vocalist who died too young was Kirsty McColl (fairytale of New York with the Pogues)

Cass Elliot has to be one of my all time favourite singers.

The thing that I find totally unique about Cass was the ambiguity in her songs. Gloomy subjects such as isolation and mass destruction are treated with a overwhelming sense of optimism and joy, which gives her solo songs in particular a great sense of pathos.

IIRC, her albums have recently been reissued and are fairly cheap. I'd certainly recommend 'Bubblegum, Lemonade, and... Something for Mama' and 'The Road Is No Place for a Lady' or perhaps better still, the great compilation 'Dream a Little Dream of Me: The Music of Mama Cass Elliot'.

anyway, here's one of my favourite songs about the apocalypse

Perfect for any time.....'make your own kind of music' In it's affirmation of diversity is more attune with modern times than the dross that fills most of the chart.

Mama Cass was/is a world wide legend!

If you like her, you may also like another legend who whilst sadly giving up with the Seekers, she is still alive and performing today.

The great Judith Durham:

And still singing LIVE in 2009

Now that's a singer! That's how to sing live X factor!”

a judith durham fan knocking the x factor?... hmmm.... just joined?... hmmm.... or are you someone else under a new name?

yeah cass eliot was a good singer, mamas and papas were quintescentially a mid 60's act and one of the few american vocal acts to make it big here.

'its getting better' is one fantastic love song, upbeat, happy, melodic..

prefer cass eliot to judith durham any day!

I am almost speechless at this performance... quite unreal.

Mama Cass. Didn't she get hit on the head, and when she came round she found she could sing in a higher key or something? Oops just seen post 29.....
