Hi I'm doing a project on role models and I am using 4 case studies: Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Beyonce.
Could you please:
-Describe each of them in 3 words
-And say which you most admire most, out of the 4
It would be a great help

I admire Lady Gaga the most, basically because she's just herself and isn't afraid of what other people think!

Don't think of Rihanna as a good role model at all to be honest

I think the best female role models in music at the minute are Cher Lloyd, Lady Gaga and Nicola Roberts

Out of all 4, Beyonce I admire most, closely followed by Gaga.

Beyonce - Boring, dull, annoying.

Sorry some of my words are a bit lame, but I couldn't really think of any that sounded good! And sorry about Beyonce too if that ruins your project or data or something but I really dislike her and couldn't lie

Now the one I admire the most would have to be Britney if I'm honest (followed closely by Lady Gaga). I really do look up to Britney in a weird way, as she did go through a really tough (regardless of whether some people think it was self-inflicted or not), and she did come through the over side a strong person even though she could have easily ended up like Amy or Whitney etc. I like how a musician she is completely iconic and may even go down as a 'legendary' status one day, and how everyone knows of her and can name at least 3 or 4 of her songs which proves that she has clearly broken the market and has affected all generations. Another reason why I admire her as no matter what she has been going through, her music has never suffered. Blackout was released during the worst period her life - and it is named the 'most influential album' of the past 5 years and it clearly started the electro-pop trend of the last few years. She also has a strong back catalogue of hits that are extremely catchy and few sound completely dated.

More importantly, on a personal level she does inspire me and her and her music have helped me through some tough times

I think Lady Gaga and Beyonce are both great role models because they are in charge of their careers, their lives and are strong women. Lady Gaga stands for being different, and also for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community having equal rights. Beyonce was able to establish a solo career after she left a group which not many people are able to do and has been successful in movies and fashion, as well as music.

I personally do not find either Rihanna or Britney to be good role models. Rihanna because she was in a abusive relationship and Britney because she seems more like a puppet than someone who's in charge of what she is doing.

I think you should consider someone like Madonna. She said in a recent interview, "I hope I'm a role model. I hope I give other girls a voice, women a voice, other women someone to look up to and admire. I keep rolling with the punches and trying to have integrity. And I hope I inspire women and give them strength to deal with life no matter what comes their way." Madonna lost her mother when she was six and was able to overcome that. I could see people who lost their parents young really looking up to her because of that.

Perhaps you should consider someone outside of pop, for example someone in rock or hip hop which are traditionally male dominated fields. It's harder for women to be in those genres. Maybe someone like Shirley Manson of Garbage, PJ Harvey, Queen Latifah or Nikki Minaj. So taking that road you have to be really strong.

Lady Gaga even though im not so much of a fan of her. She is true to herself and down to earth. Her music inspires and encourages. She is a good singer and interesting performer.

Lady Gaga - Fake, OTT, Independent
Britney - Puppet, Strong, Honest
Beyoncé - Talented, Independent, Hot
Rihanna - Fun, Loud, Out There

I would admire Beyoncé the most, then Britney, then Rihanna the Gaga

Not contemporary, but Kate Bush was the first female artist to put her foot down and not allow herself to be controlled or dictated to by a record label as they so often did towards female singers back then. Some would argue Debbie Harry played a large role in that too.

Others I would suggest are Adele and Rumer.

To be honest, too many female 'artists' today lack talent and are purely being used by their record labels to generate vasts amounts of profit using the 'sex sells' method.

Before I even read the thread I was thinking Kate Bush. Out of your selection I'm not sure Rihanna is a good role model. Obviously she isn't setting out to be a role model and shouldn't change her behaviour because of that, but if I had a young daughter and she aspired to be like Rihanna I wouldn't be best pleased.

Rihanna - Sexy, wild and outrageous.
Gaga - Unique, empowering and smart.
Britney - Loveable, inspiring and timid.
Beyonce - Powerful, angelic and relaxed.

My favourite is Britney, she has been though a lot and is a true role model for turning your life around.

Tbh i dont care about a load of today current mainstream popstars really, out of that list i have grown up with Britney SPears and dmire her and will always support her She is alongside Kylie and Janet as one of the Princesses Of Pop and has impacted Pop CUlture in such a massive scale for her music, performances and private life. As Madonna says "she is built like a brick shithouse"....Britney is MENTAL! and she takes no prisoners

But in terms of my personal preferences

MADONNA is my music female inspiration. In terms of her music and the fact her music brings back memories, nostalgia and still makes such an impact and influence today, some absolutely stunning and captivating videos, her performances elevated the standard and her influence in pop culture...no other artist can match that standard ever again! . She has made some of the greatest albums of all time (Like A Prayer, Erotica, Ray Of Light, Music, Confessions On A Dance Floor to name a few). Plus she is tough, she can take criticism, she can blast back at it in an ironic way and she is icy! like a warrior....yes Madonna is my female hero in music.

Kate Bush is right behind there, my fave British artist of all time EVER she is a Britnish Queen Of Pop, mad, chaotic and very unconventional. She really stuck a middle finger up at what is considered a "cultural norm" in popular music. Again her music really defies time and has no specific genre! It is just manic absurd Pop...and she still makes it today as innovative and warped as ever. She is a very inspiring lady because she made the music to make an artistic statement and influenced thousands and thousands of people...the fame was a second resort really.

Grace Jones, She was the avant-garde before it had a name! taking her Island styles and influences and pushing it into popular culture, a stunning lady with a remarkable, feline quality about her. Again albums Warm Leatherette, Nightclubbing, Inside Story and Hurricane are massive albums! on different scales as a performer she defied the limits!

So yeah those three woman of music are my personal influences... sorry bit passionate but true as i can be

To be honest, I'd be the complete opposite. Rihanna knows she isn't the best at singing and dancing; that's been shown in her performances and even from when she had her small talent contesty thingies when she was younger. But she's still persevered and become one of the leading women in pop.

She has a fantastic work ethic, she's strong minded and can make her own decisions with a fair amount of knowledge of the consequences, and she carries on whatever happens.

That is why she's an inspiration to me anyway; I might not be the best educationally, or creatively, but I have enough to keep me going; the same as Rihanna. I have to say out of the four I do admire Rihanna more.

So, my three word things:

Rihanna: Determined, Headstrong, Bold
Britney: Iconic, Vulnerable, Controlled
Beyoncé: Beautiful, Dominating, Consistent
GaGa: Creative, Survivor, Selfless

Florence for me. Always in the media for the right reasons.

Fair comments. Still though, for me, I wouldn't want a young daughter admiring someone who dresses like Rihanna and sings overly sexual songs like her. I'd much rather she picked a musician, as in someone who could play an instrument. Or hell, a writer or an intelligent thinker. Just not Rihanna. There are hundreds of famous people with drive and perseverance that can be chosen.

I appreciate that Put aside the oversexuality of her, and there is still a very appealing package there. I do see what you mean, there are far better role models, although the story of Rihanna's rise to fame relates to me much more than that of the other three raised in this thread.

I do think she has a lot of admirable qualities, I can see them. I just wouldn't want a young daughter to, I don't think a child would see her perseverance and drive, they'd just see a woman singing about adult things. If you see what I mean.

None of the above for real female role models you should be looking at:

Madonna
Lily Allen
Laura Marling
To name a few

People who are not image based or puppets and changed the pop landscape in someway for woman Kate Bush the prime example just my thoughts.

With the addition of Patti Smith and PJ Harvey and a few others I totally agree.

None of these women appeal to me but if I had to pick one, it would be Lady Gaga who is at least different, original and confident.

The other 3 are arrogant, boring divas.

Lets be honest here Rihana sings through her nose, isnt the best of dancers, isnt a good role model and doenst write her songs and worked with her ex boyfriend after he beat her up???

gaga? Shes that insecure she has to go out dressed as kermit the frog.

Britney? Adore her but the public have ruined her.

Beyonce yes shes pretty much an allrounder.

Whoever said Cher Loyd?? Seriously? I nearly spat my drink out. She is KNOWN to have an attitude problem.

I think you need to look at madonna for anything to be credible.

It would be interesting if the choices were more varied, as the OPs choices are hardly diverse. Kate Bush, Patti Smith, Siouxsie Sioux and Debbie Harry are all brilliant choices. If more modern artists are needed, someone like Beth Ditto would provide tonnes to write about.

..Other than Madonna & Lily Allen, I'd say the others are ideal Female role models, not having to show boobs, bum & fanny or sing about it to gain respect.

Out of all of them, Gaga has my vote, followed not-so-closely by Beyonce. The reason being that Gaga works the hardest and is the best at what she does out of the people listed. She sings very well, she plays an instrument, produces, writes, composes, performs, dances, directs, sews, glues and sparkles. She has her fingers in every pie of the business that she is expected to be using in order to be responsible for what she does on stage and how she is percieved by her fans.

There are very few acts that tour the entire world at such a pace, there are even fewer who do it whilst taking a recording studio on the road with them... there are none who do it whilst being political activists and social icons trying to use their fame, money, and subsequent power to change the world for the better after their experiences as a child.

She very rarely slates others unless they're being particularly bad mannered, she stands up for what's right. She's educated and well spoken, which is another thing you don't see from people such as Britney Spears and Rihanna.

She gets slated for wearing risque clothes, but why shouldn't she? She has a great body - should she be ashamed of it? No. Does Michael Angelo's David cover up? Does the Venus De Milo? No. We all have nipples, some of us have vaginas - there's nothing wrong with it, and the fact that Gaga is completely unashamed of it is marvellous. She has a great body, but she didn't used to have before the extreme touring - she has a quite average body, but still didn't cover up. Know why? Because she has no illusions about the human body - and that sends the most positive message of all. She is unashamed of showing all of herself - because she's only got one selt, and so have we.
