It's the first of the one hour studio based shows on the 5th of September with guest Emma Thompson (who was there to promote her new Peter Rabbit book). We have VTs on a woman called Lucy who rescued people stranded on a level crossing (the "big decision" series), Maureen Lipman's garden (Christine Walkden), Scottish Lochs (another day of John Sergeant's feature), and the difference between incandescent and energy saving light bulbs.

We also have a feature running through the show on a viewer called Frank who was a bell-ringer since he was 12, and them giving him the opportunity to ring the Jubilee bells. This seems to be a theme for the hour shows - pick someone who has worked for their community and showcase them by giving them a treat (referring to them as an "unsung hero"). This time Carrie Grant was doing the link work, but Matt met the couple in the morning as the wife is a big fan

The hour long show gave them longer to talk to the guest and to spend on the VTs properly. There weren't any more VTs than normal, they just had a couple of extra minutes each. And the "unsung hero" idea is the sort of thing that's likely to be popular with a lot of the audience.

Matt is wearing a grey jacket with white buttons, white shirt, and jeans

Rita - yes more and more gawgus every week. and yes what were the red neckscarves on the sheep for. Was expecting a barn dance to start!

Evening

Thanks for the tissues lotus

Lovely cf tonight, matt having a little journey by train and boat, he just has to honk the train horn and push buttons at the locks beautiful scenery along the route.
Matt had fun climbing up the pine tree, bet he had great views from the top as we did when he was getting ready to climb and and he was going up.
He looked fab in his fleece and jeans and some super close up.

Great 2nd part with adam up in the swiss mountains with the sheep, the black faced ones are really cute, wonder if adam will take some home with him.

Poor JB trying to mountain climb in a long skirtbut what a pair of troupers were the 2 "senior" ladies. Lovely prog all round with really good items from all presenters.

Just seen your guy on One Man and His Dog. I didn't know the trials were still being televised! My wee-est dog looks just like Mo (first dog, second day) that's my claim to fame -- to a whisker. Had to get up and check she hadn't done a bunk.

... Hey, and she wins! Go Mo.

hello good to see you

the trials are televised every year just not normally live. Usually filmed this time of year then shown at Xmas. This year was a first with it being live....and I guess it bit them on the bum a bit with the golf over-running

its always good to have a claim to fame Don't think my dog would be very good at sheep-herding unfortunately. Shame cos it might have come in handy when the bubba's start crawling

and your right....Mo rocks

Hi Pet Monkey...lovely to see you over here

Have been following the very interesting and warm-hearted Johnny & Aliona thread. There's a lot of love for Mr Ball and I'm sure their partnership will bring a smile to the nation

Yes, OMAHD was televised this Saturday (Part 2) and Part 1 was last Saturday - it may have unfortunately gone from IPlayer now. 'Mo' was an absolute heroine in our eyes...the way she faced down the sheep was nothing short of miraculous....if looks could kill!! What a tremendous collie and it's great your dog is the spitting image of Mo...they are so courageous, obedient and beautiful to look at. You must be very proud of your wee dog!!

It seems to have been an awfully long evening.......

Highlights on CF of course were El Presidente all harnessed up and dangling from the tree and also the sequences of him on the West Highland train. Bet you loved seeing all that area again, Lotus. The scenery was stunning. That shot of the train going over the Glenfinnan Viaduct was truly iconic....there was some fabulous camera work on CF tonight, not only of the trains Matt was indeed looking completely delicious, just everything was right about him. The backpack emphasised his shoulder line and he was magnificent

Thanks KK for the latest phawtaws, you've done some sterling work there....

http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/...ps945bae26.png

As I mentioned on the other channel, what a fortunate woman to be on the receiving end of such loveliness Wonder if the flowery lady needed some smelling salts afterwards.....

Having had a hectic weekend and very little rest, it's time for me to hit the sack.....so CCM to one and all, hope all peeps have a good sleep....POCs to Cass, bodding about her neck of the woods all night (not really the woods ) and trust everyone is refreshed to face Monday Goodnight  xx

Mo was seriously good at her job, wasn't she

Watched it on Iplayer yesterday. I have a cat, Tiger, who spent the whole episode trying to get inside the computer to locate the whistling. I feel he might do quite well as a sheepcat - wonder if it's ever been tried

Morning all. It was a good Countryfile last night wasn't it? I really like the episodes where there is a journey taking place that links together the content. And usually it's Matt doing that type of journey (very CountryTracks / Open Country) with Ellie doing the same role on the specials (or clip shows ).

He always seems genuinely happy when he gets to go on these train or boat journeys - I wonder if doing a travel programme would suit him? Something like Michael Portillo's Railway Journeys would seem a good fit for Matt - getting to visit places and find out about the locals and quirky stories. It's why I do like the Open Country episodes as they have that feel...

Last night also illustrated my point about Matt being the "main presenter" of Countryfile. I was trying to express that I think the BBC see him as the main presenter. If Matt is on the show then regardless of the amount of time he gets on screen he tends to be the name that's listed first on the website or in the press articles. I spotted last night that they weren't using the group photo when announcing Countryfile coming up on the BBC - they were using the solo photo of Matt .

I think that when you consider that they up-ended their entire filming schedule to keep him on the show they probably do regard him as their most important asset and they probably have viewer research to back that up (consider the Countryfile Magazine survey - "favourite countryside presenter" - Matt 1st, Adam Henson 2nd, John Craven 3rd, Julia was 4th or 5th...) . I can't help thinking they wouldn't have done the same thing for Julia (they'd probably just have replaced her with Ellie)

Rating for last night's Countryfile: 5.63m (20.6%).

Not bad given that it started part way through the X-Factor on ITV (7:30-9pm and highest rated show of the night). The BBC must love that they can just rely on Countryfile to hold a decent audience when going up against anything and at any time between 6-9pm!

I think if he's going to stay in a presenting role this would be the ideal sort of thing for him. I've said once before that he'd make a great modern-day Alan Wicker (for those of us that remember Alan Wicker). Not only does he seem to love this sort of journey but he's very good at talking to people and bringing the best out of them - essential for that sort of role. Still hoping he'll one day leave the presenting behind altogether though and go into entertainment of the dancing/acting variety. I have a feeling he's itching to do something along those lines - and he'd be fantastic.

And yes, last night's CountryFile was very enjoyable. Everything seemed to flow, and all the subjects covered were interesting - even Adam whose segments I don't usually enjoy mainly because they often seemed to be going over the same ground - quite literally really. Was nice to see him leave his farm behind and head for my region of the world

The item on children not being able to enjoy the countryside today was interesting as well. I think that's only part of the story though. They also don't seem to be allowed any time to themselves to just think, muck about and get bored - which is when great personal development often occurs. All the modern-day kids I know are occupied 100% with after school activities like dancing, sports etc. They need to enjoy the great outdoors but they also need time to themselves.

Not bad at all. I suppose to put it up against X-Factor shows the confidence the BBC has in CountryFile. Has it been up against it in previous years? I can't remember.

Same week last year it was at 7pm and got 5.94m viewers up against an X-Factor starting at 7:30pm. Antiques Roadshow had the 8pm slot and got 5.79m.

By comparison back then X-Factor got 10.3m as opposed to last night's 8.96m (so X-Factor down 15%, BBC 8pm programme down around 3%). In other words, Countryfile & the BBC held up much better year-on-year than X-Factor & ITV

This is a seriously friendly thread Hello to everyone, bubbas, sheep-cats and all!

It's made me giggle thinking of Mo getting all this loving on the SCD forum. Parallel universes. 'An absolute heroine'... her ear tips will be blushing. She really was though, and I like the way the commentators recognised she had a right to defend herself when the Vampire Monster Gangsta Sheep (what was wrong with them?) came back for another go. She's only ickle.

Wonder how long we have to wait for the Aliona and Johhny training vid.

Yes, the landscape looked beautiful on CF last night and the person who showed us that beautiful scenery looking gorgeous. He found his toy again as he could not stop to toot the train horn.

He's far too good at his job to show any dislike on TV when it would spoil things for him to look squeamish, and I have a friend who is so polite she always asks for second helpings of things she doesn't like, just to show her appreciation for being invited. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Matt did that.

In my own case, I'd like to accept an oyster if I were offered one just to be polite, but it would backfire because I would gag - I just know I would. So better to say no - to anything jellylike (other than dessert jelly), and anything live!”

I had the same thought re – oyster because I find him is mysterious. One thing I can’t stop thinking is that Matt is very diplomatic and wouldn’t mind to show diplomacy if it would be ok (if not too bad) for him to give it a go. On the OS, he appeared he enjoyed oyster and it seemed believable. Alex clearly showed she doesn’t like it. But Julia knows him more than I do so I don’t think she was making it up just because they needed the oyster subject to be brought into their conversation. She could just simply say that she doesn’t really like. So we would not know whether he likes it or not that easily by looking it.

I am a bit odd. Food can’t get into my mouth unless my nose and eyes accept it. Nose first, eyes second and mouth comes last.

I didn't do anything to the links! The filenames from photobucket just seem to have got longer - not sure why that would stop you copying anything though...

Example: I just selected the text for this and copied it - http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/...psd2cc02ae.png - and that link works fine

Of course another simple way is click the link, and copy the link from the browser address bar...

Hi Cass. Hols long forgotten I guess
Hope you manage to find time to catch up and also watch this week's offerings.

Sarah Lancashire on TOS tonight. Had to google her as didn't know who she was, but do recognize her face. New period series about a shop I think. Looked to me from the trailers a bit like another series I watched a few years back. Can't remember what it was called.

Wonder if Matt's had a mop chop? Wonder if the razor's been in action? Wonder what sartorial splendour we'll see? So many uncertainties in life

Shorn but not shaved then by the looks of it.

I saw that quote. Lovely thing to say, but then from all the hundreds of tweets we've seen from people who've met him he seems to be pretty universally liked

Well, I know I mentioned sartorial splendour earlier on, but I honestly wasn't expecting it! Gave me quite a turn to see a waistcoat again - thought they'd gone forever.

Now I know you'll all think I'm being very, very difficult, but this wasn't quite the waistcoat look I was after. More in shirt sleeves, preferably black with white shirt, and possiblly undone. But hey, any port in a storm as they say. Did not like the mop chop though. I really wish he'd keep the sideburns.

Difficult guest tonight. There seemed be some tension between the three of them. Wonder what that was all about.
