Well, I must admit to being really disappointed with the BBC coverage this afternoon, and that is no way a criticism of Matt. I just think the whole concept of the overage was bizarre. I was really looking forward to hearing a little about each of the ten groups of boats, having some individual ones picked out, and described. I really didn't need the cutting away to various celebs, in particular Tess Daly doing nondescript activities with the crowd.

I was looking forward to hearing the ten music boats, each playing different kinds of music. Except for the last boat and the London PhilharmonicmOrchestra. Even that was messed up. It wasn't just the weather, it was that nobody seemed to have planned to do that. As for poor Matt stuck in the studio with Sophie, I couldn't see what his role was, nor I think, could he. It was a massive misuse of his talent and competence.

Nor could I see the point of the boat with Sandi T and co. they didn't seem to contribute anything.

I really feel for Matt, as the press coverage is going to be very negative, and I don't think he will be pleased with how his role worked out. He did look stunning, though. I just wonder if a preparatory meeting alerted him to the fact it was going to be a bit of a dog's dinner. Perhaps that's why he exited tw. So suddenly.

I was looking forward to an enjoyable afternoon, and I think the BBC got it terribly, terribly wrong. And that had nothing to do with the weather.

Sorry to anyone who holds a different opinion. These are just the feelings I am left with this evening. Other threads on here suggest I would have had a much more satisfactory experience of the pageant watching another channel.

I think the coverage didn't work but I disagree that it wasn't to do with the weather. The BBC had groups of presenters / reporters with each group of boats. The intention was that they would have gone to each section during the pageant to talk about those boats and what was happening.

The weather destroyed that for them. That's why Sandi etc were there and they would have been used a lot more in good conditions. Losing those links meant they had to backfill with commentary instead and they fell over there.

Matt I think struggled as a result of that - likely because any script changes were last minute, not written by himself, and delivered via autocue. I don't think that's Matt's idea of a good time when presenting really for obvious reasons.

The comments about Sky being better mostly come from people who hate the BBC. Having seen some of it they had their share of screw ups too - Kay Burley was her usual hideous self. But because they treated it as a news event rather than a big occasion it was simpler and probably easier to manoeuvre when problems arose.

I really, really, don't think this has anything at all to do with Matt leaving twitter either. And he's a big boy - I'm sure a bit of criticism in the press won't hurt him. It also won't hurt his career - Jake Humphreys was atrocious presenting the new years eve fireworks and the year to the Olympics live event. He still got the fireworks job the next year and a really good Olympics role

Couldn't agree more MM. The BBC got the whole thing just plain wrong. The footage of the boats was fascinating. How often do we get to see such a sight? What was required was a little dignity, a little history of the Thames, the boats, the buildings, who they were, why they were there etc. For some reason though, the BBC seemed to decide the occasion was all about themselves and their presenters. The weather had been predicted for days so shouldn't have taken anyone by surprise. In fact the failure of the links to more boats was probably a blessing as it would have simply meant even more inane banter.

People are saying Sky's coverage was better, which doesn't mean of course that it was good. Surely it couldn't have been worse! It upsets me to realize that the BBC who used to be the real experts at this sort of thing have come to this.

As far as the main presenters are concerned, I think Matt and Sophie did a good job of trying to make sense out of it all. I can't think of anyone who would have done any better in those circumstances. Sophie seemed to be getting increasingly hysterical behind an attempted calm exterior, and the little mistakes wouldn't have mattered if the programme had been good. From the reviews I've read, very few are singling out the presenters (at least those in the studio), it's the whole concept of the coverage that is being criticized, and rightly so. So I'm not too worried about Matt's reputation. Just hope he's not beating himself up about it, because none of it is his fault.

Everything else aside though, I do think four hours of watching boats was always going to be a little too much. They would have done better, surely, to have filmed it and put together a decent programme for later viewing.

Such interesting comments on the pageant and media coverage. The weather had a significant impact on the whole proceedings and the event could therefore not be so slickly managed and reported on....had we had a glorious sunny day, the ambience of the whole venture would have been so completely different.

But all in all I didn't think the coverage was that awful, it was a bit all over the shop and shambolic in places, but Matt turned up on time, and delivered what he was asked to do albeit there were a few awkward pauses due to links not working etc. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the experience Lotus, you needed the wet weather gear but even that probably didn't keep you dry. I'm sure you must have had a marvellous day, the huge crowds and jolly patriotism must have created a fantastic atmosphere.

Managed to catch 5 minutes of the gym late last night, and saw most of CF where Matt was in his element looking gorgeous with his hedge trimmers.

As well as helping at a Jubilee Lunch for nearly 100 people, there was all this Mattiness to cope with as well...what a day!

Next appearance of MB....6.30 tonight on the One Show - again something else for me to record as I won't be around. This week is turning out to be very exhausting.

I was switching 2 channels back and forth so I couldn’t pay full attention on yesterday pageant & gym coverage. I will watch them again and share my thoughts later.

Just to mention a few things I noted that commentator(s) doing presenters’ jobs, presenters playing commentators’ roles and individual reporters (participants) were put on the screen without being linked by the presenters suggested that things didn’t go as planned for numerous reasons that has not yet been clearly identified.

Regarding Matt, he is at best where there is excitement but under the circumstances yesterday, if people thinks that the whole event was an exciting event I would like to know which part of it. As far as I know, in three consecutive weeks his was non-stop filming, I mean 7 days a week (live gym coverage in France over the weekends + the One Show + CF filming on Friday). He didn’t get the chance to focus on a particular coverage like others have had the opportunity of preparation but he coped considerably well. His earpiece didn’t seem to work well as I noticed that he seemed to lost Alex when she said, ‘see you tomorrow Matt, have fun, bye’. Correct me if I am wrong. If the live coverage is downloadable, I can capture those moments but I don’t think it would be downloadable unless KK manage to do the picsapm. Or may be Matt and Alex chat about this issue on the OS this evening.

I do not worry for Matt. I am sure he is fine and is getting better and better. He has the strong will and mental strength which are two of the main reasons I admire most. I personally has have been gone through very well the nativities from those people around me including full-blooded family members. All I needed was to learn to ignore their worthless and useless views and kept focus on what I was doing; the success and achievements became mine, not theirs at the end. He is a famous face and is in the limelight so unsurprisingly those negativity people hugely interested in him. I perfectly understand that it is irresistible for them to keep talking about him. He is like a magnet not only to us but to them as well.

I can’t resist saying Matt was dashing and utterly charming yesterday. It would be sad if we can’t see the picspam. Looking lovely on Gym coverage interviewing Mitch and very lively and adorable on CF. I haven’t got the chance to see Animal Rescue Squad though as I went off to church.

As to Daily Mail or whatever the tabloid paper is, their pieces of news articles are undeniably subjective to make their pieces of news to hit the headline to draw people attention as much as possible so as the business can generate profits as their revenue goes up, as the result the business survives. Have they looked at where the roots of a matter lies before they jump on a conclusion? Never! Because that’s not their job! The nature of the business is to be a trouble-maker not a trouble-shooter. Am I wrong?

I meant to say morning everyone. The weather is dry so BBC won't have any issues with the live concert tonight and we have an hour live the OS broadcasts from just outside the palace? It would be nice they show the VT of Matt and Alex at the tea party.

10.3m (55.9%) for the Jubilee. For once, I wish the figure had been lower because I really think the BBC needs a good shake-up in its approach to major events and to news in general. Things will only get worse if they congratulate themselves on having done well in spite of the weather etc.!

Although on the other hand, I'm happy because ratings success will cheer Matt up, and that's the more important thing

Sorry but I don't agree at all. The BBC actually responded to criticism of their royal wedding coverage being dull and too serious by trying to do something more lively. And now they're getting criticised for that. Online I notice the BBC are getting a fair amount of support from real journalists and people who work behind the scenes like camera crew.

It didn't work well because they planned for a sunny day. But they will have an inquest to work out what they should have done instead. Fundamentally though I guess the show worked well enough for a fifth of the UK population to watch

Forgot to add that Countryfile rates higher than the Gary Barlow jubilee thing. It surprised me because I thought people might have been getting dinner after watching the pageant and so it might have been lower than usual

Croak croak sniff sniff no voice and feel like c**p. Very interesting comments and will catch pageant or at least some of it today. Must admit to feeling rather apprehensive after reading posts - have not seen any press reports of coverage,

I was there and can tell you the rain started just as the first boat left and then the deluge commenced Luckily we had waterproofs, atmosphere was brilliant but the weather put paid to any apres pageant knees up as we Londoners (or ex in my case) are wont to do. Had planned a little trip down the Mall but caught train home 2 hours earlier than planned
The cloud was so heavy that the top of the new Shard building could not be seen.Remember on T1S Mb said he would have" preferred to be on the boats but never mind".

Most presenters have some episode in their careers that they want to put behind them and perhaps this is his so tonight is a different day a different venue.

Glad CF did so well - am so pleased that its holding its own . I have that to look forward to as well

I would suggest a) look at the weather forecast, and b) hire producers with some experience in events like this.

Don’t be apprehensive Lotus, I’d say watch it on the floor because M was thudworthy. He was stunning; you can f/fwd the part(s) you are not particularly interested in. Shame you were there but didn’t get the chance to see the man in flash. The main reason I watched the program was because of Matt although I was slightly curious about the themes pageant.

The ratings really surprised me. I didn’t expect it at all.

I don’t think it is justifiable to seek the individuals or the BBC as a whole as the scapegoat producing on that scales, under those circumstances in a very long, long live coverage.

Hello everyone, I watched the BBC and enjoyed it. It supposed to be a fun day instead of a "Dimbleby" sycophant broadcast somber and dull.

Matt picked the short shraw and got stuck in the studio. The rain made it heavy going for the os team however I loved the spectacle and the silly events enroute. Under the circumstances I think the BBC did very well and it seem a lot of people watched with me.

I am looking forward to seeing Matt and Alex tonight, it should be a blast!

A very good rating for the pageant, the beeb will be happy with that.

It does make you wonder if they had any plan b for bad weather or they were just going to carry on with the planned coverage regardless and just let the presenters carry on with what has been arranged, its the presenters that are in the front line end up getting alot of criticism in the press when things go wrong and the beeb in general and not the directors and producers so much.

Excellent viewing figures for cf, as if was on later due to the pageant over running.

Lotus glad you had a good day despite the weather, didn't realise it was raining from the start, the weather was terrible by the end, we did see pictures of the shard and the cloud getting lower and lower down it. Have a few hot toddys and limpsips for your croaky voice.

Looking forward to a hour tt special at Buck pal, see how our man is,and if he's happy, will they say anything about the pageant or carry on as normal.

Would imagine the weather will get a mention if nothing else!!

Went shopping with my daughter-in-law last week and discovered pink is fashionable over here too, especially salmon pink. She loves it - I hate it. Don't think you'd see it on a man over here though.

And normal service was resumed this evening! Good One Show there with a comfier looking sofa than the normal studio set and a relaxed Matt & Alex. The show format worked well too with the guest changes and the pre-recorded interviews for when it was getting too close to the concert time. Looked lovely too

Very enjoyable the One Show tonight. I'd agree with KK re- the show format perfectly worked well with the guests, live and pre-recorded VT links. A couple of gorgeous adorable close-ups there too, thanks to the cameraperson and the production team. I think Alex's jacket matched with Matt's trousers whereas his shirt matched the colour of her trousers. They used to wear like this as far as I noticed.


Matt’s so warm and lively, what a natural great charmer! I like the OS outdoor setting too and I think Matt and Alex have the best seat on the bus to watch the live concert ...food and drinks are available for them as well. The best part of the night including concert for me has to be Matt and Alex singing happy birthday with Steve Wonder. Seeing him chair dancing and sing-along with them is the highlight of the night!

Ys it was a brilliant TT tonight, Matt doesnt deserve all the C... hes getting on twitter, i think hes doing a fantastic job, yesterdays rubbish wasnt down to him!

And i agree the singing along with Stevie W was just perfect as *whispers* its my birthday next week so i could dream he was singing to me along with thousands of others
