according to wikipedia, Rihanna was originally marketed as a reggae singer since she burst into the music scene in 2005, with a styles of pop, R&B and dancehall. Her music include various styles of musical genres, including contemporary R&B, dance-pop and the Caribbean music styles of reggae and dancehall.[148] With the release of Music of the Sun and its lead single "Pon de Replay", Jason Birchmeier of Allmusic described Rihanna's musical style as "synthesize Caribbean rhythms and beats with standard-issue urban dance-pop: Caribbean-inflected urban, if you will."[149] Rihanna is described as utilizing "dancehall-lite beats and a reggae vocal cadence."[149] NME describes the singer as a "heady mix of dancehall, reggae and contemporary R&B."[150] Barry Walters of Rolling Stone considers Rihanna's A Girl Like Me to be "lightweight dancehall and R&B jams."[151] After the release of Good Girl Gone Bad, Allmusic's Andy Kellman credits Rihanna to be "as pop as pop gets."[152] Kelefa Sanneh of The New York Times described her hit "Umbrella" as a lightweight pop confection with a heavy hip-hop backbeat, a breezy love song enriched by those unexpectedly goth-sounding keyboards and by the incongruous hint of anguish in Rihanna’s girlish voice.[153]

Not that well. She's better off doing what she does.

she would've done terribly as a reggae act.

The answer is as simple as looking at this decade and comparing the scale and magnitude of pop music with reggae music. A rather clear-cut comparison.

Above the fact that a genre is never easy to define - we all know the answer but we would have to be pedantic on genre definition to argue it.

she wont have the success she's having if she had stuck as a reggae singer.

Well there are elements of Reggae and dancehall throughout her music especially on earlier albums and most recently Man Down but overall better as a pop tart

I think they had no idea how to market her. She was light reggae, then r&b and then pop/r&b with a little dance and light reggae, and then Rated R and up to now. Only recently they've found what works for her which is pop with a little r&b twist and the odd west indian tinged song. They need to make the formula good though. I want a full reggae album from her next, I only really jam to Man Down, Watch n Learn, Pon De Replay and Rude boy.

I think the variation in her music has been to her advantage like Madonna know one knows what may come next rather than just pop with a little dance theres something for everyone.

And too right the Man Down video one of her best but for ovbious reasons Rape, Murder not a viable single choice

It could've been if they really promoted it. I loved it, and many did too. It charted well in the US to say only it only had urban radio adds. IMO it would be the best type of music for her to make. Stuff with a point.
