Like most people, the stand upon which my TV is on is 20 inches high.
Why then, do people mount their television half way up the wall ?
Doesn't it give you horrendous neck ache ?
How high is YOUR television mounted ?

Ours is 1 metre from the floor to the bottom of the TV, plenty high enough for us.

Bottom of our TV (50") is just over a metre off the floor, perfect for where we are sat.

The bottom of our PJ screen is a metre off the floor too, but the top of it is only about 30cm from the ceiling, but this is a whole different viewing experience anyway, a reasonable sized TV mounted only 30cm from the ceiling would be ridiculous.

When I go to the in laws it doesn't feel as comfortable watching their TV which is on a stand, it feels too low.

I don't understand why so many have their tvs high up on a wall, I can only assume it's for decor/showing off purposes.

My 40inch tv is on a low stand so that the top of the screen is just above eye level when I'm in my comfy chair. This makes for a comfortable viewing experience without straining my eyes or neck, just my wrist.
(I'm talking about channel flipping using the remote, get your minds out of the gutter)

I'm with you, too many people popping them high above the mantelpiece thinking it's cool.
If you have to sit with your neck in an unnatural position then the TV is in the wrong place. The bottom of my screen is 18" from the floor which puts the centre of the screen at eye level for viewing from our current seats.

Our 46inch tv is about 1.4 metres from the floor to the bottom of the TV above the mantle piece and is just right, when sat down we look straight ahead, when you go the the cinema you look ahead and upwards not downwards so it is right

95 cm from the floor, I'm fine with that, my next door neighbours TV is on top of his fireplace, not sure how they watch it comfortably tbh, but each to their own.

My bedroom tv is high but it's comfortable to watch in bed

We originally go a flat screen to replace a CRT to make some space in our rather cramped living room, and the only place to hang it was above the fireplace. You get used to it. In fact when lying back on the sofa my head naturally tilts up to it feels very natural, if it was lower down I would have to sit up.

I suppose if your mantelpiece is a really low one, I worked out that the seat on my sofa would have to be at least 2'6" high for me to look straight ahead over the mantel....
I'd give the cinema a miss if I had to look upwards.....I suppose you would from all those unoccupied seats on the ground level. from most of the seats you actually look straight ahead.....well you do in our cinema anyway.

Taking this to it's natural conclusion you could nail the tv to the ceiling and lie on your back to view although taking an occasional gulp from a can of lager might be a bit of a problem.

If I were to position my TV so the top was at eye level when sat the bottom of the TV would only be a few inches off the floor, so what you have been told does't sound right to me.

I would say when sat on an average settee your eye level is around 3ft, when sat you don't sit bolt upright, so I'd say the bottom of the TV would need to be about 3ft off the floor/at eye level. You also have to take the distance you are sat from the TV in to consideration too, sitting 4ft from a TV that is regarded as too high then of course you would have to look up, sit 12ft away relaxing on a sofa it could be at the perfect height.

At the end of the day folk will stick them were they feel is best for them, whether it is right/wrong in our eyes.

My 40" LCD/LED is above my mantle piece and dont have any issues with it being there.
The main reason it's there is 1) Its central to the room, so perfect for my surround sound setup. 2) We now have so much more free space in the front room.
As far as I'm concerned there's no set rules as to where you should have your TV positioned as it whatever your comfortable with.

I find that ideally when sitting down your eyes should be at the level of the bottom of the TV screen. This way you don't have to look up too high. So don't go by how high it should be from the floor, but how high it should from where you 'll be sitting.

As someone said, it's down to personal preference, but, your advice for me would put the TV too high. I look at the centre of the screen when sitting......
Room layouts don't always lend themselves to having the TV in an ideal position either.
As long as everyone is happy with their lot then all power to them I suppose..

I couldn't agree with you more: that's exactly why I have the same set-up. Do some of the plonkers on here truly think anyone would deliberately give themselves a crick in the neck? That could only happen when you are sat MUCH too close.

Purely as a matter of interest, we fitted a 55 inch set today - the bottom of the set was 35 inches from the floor (as per the customers instructions).

It looked DAMN GOOD

And the first gambit when faced with plonkers......

It didn't take long for someone to drag down the tone.
It's amazing how some people have little to add to a discussion and revert to type very quickly in order to justify something....

Anyway, back to the thread. The problem of the "correct" height or distance when viewing a screen will never be resolved, and doesn't need to be, because it depends on individual taste and comfort. If it's right for a person, end of story.
