Just being curious here but how many hours of 3D programming do you watch. I don't watch as much as I did when I first got a 3DTV. I watch the occasional football match on the Sky 3D channel (mainly when Man U, Chelsea or Arsenal are playing) or perhaps a movie that I'de like to see or wildlife programs when shown.

So I would say around 3-4 hours per week maximum.

I would imagine that's probably above average? - I suspect most people get tired of it fairly quickly and hardly ever use it after a few weeks.

Certainly the few people I've asked when I've seen them a few months after having the set fitted have all said they hardly ever use it any more.

Probably about 15mins a month - enough time to show any visiting friends how massively over-rated £D is...

i find that a pretty difficult question to answer, as it depends on what is available to watch - I don't watch 3D for the sake of it.

I haven't watched any 3D for a couple of weeks, because I haven't bought any new Blu-rays, there hasn't been much new to Sky 3D, and my PS3 has been ignored in favour of my new PS Vita.

However, I intend to get back into Uncharted 3 and WipEout HD on the PS3 pretty soon, I've seen Gears Of War 3 for a good price on the XBox360, I'll probably pick up TT3D on Blu-ray and there are a couple of new 3D movies on Sky next month, so pretty soon 3D viewing will take up a significant proportion of the time I spend in front of the TV.

Then what was the point in purchasing a 3D capable TV if its so over rated. That I don't understand tbh.

Apart from Rugby League, sport is just as tedious in 3D as it is in 2D and even RL doesn't really gain anything by it: the commentators are different and the camera angles aren't as good.
Movies and natural history programmes generally show it off best.
I don't watch that much of it and if I were relying solely on Sky's disappointing efforts it would be even less.

Because I didn't choose my TV for it's 3D capabilities. I wanted a good Smart TV....and 3D just happens to be one of the TV's functions. I have a 3D Blu-ray Player too, but that was part of a good deal....and I bought that for my son, not me..

I'm sure there will be plenty of people out there who specifically bought a TV for 3D use who're actually disappointed by it.....the same can be said about HD.

I wouldn't say I watch 3D for the sake of it either. I do however game in 3D quite a lot. I find it makes for a far better gaming experience.

Fair enough. in your opinion, do you think 3D will ever take off ?. It seems that quite a lot of people on here that do have 3D see it as a gimmick or as you say, over rated.

I think it's only ever going to be a niche product.

Asides from it's gimmicky nature, it's also a difficult medium to watch without getting headaches. If the strain/effort required to view it can somehow be reduced, then this can only help increase it's popularity.

The only strain I've ever had with 3D is the strain of watching some really crap movies. The technology is ok but the material is often disappointing.
I wouldn't get too excited about so-called "smart" tv. I've already been called an imbecile for pointing out its deficiencies but it's pretty underwhelming stuff.

Horses for courses, I suppose. Smart TVs are the future though, they really are. They'll basically evolve into massive laptops...

I'd rather my laptop evolved into a massive telly.
You're probably right but smart tv still has a very long way to go.

5 minutes without 3d glasses

I don't possess a pair as I already wear a pair for short sightedness so I am note sure that 3D would work for me. It would not be easy to wear two pairs of glasses.

I think 3D was just a fad whilst TV manufacturers were getting their digital streaming content to an acceptable level for the masses. I think that 3D is something that every generation has attempted ever since the first attempt back in the 50's . It does not work as nothing can persuade the human brain that they are not sat on a sofa unless you had something that makes the whole experience one of virtual reality. The technology is there but the cost is expensive and there must be obvious questions about people being cut off from the real World.

Kinda defeats the object of a portable PC really, because you're really going to struggle to sit on a train with a 40" TV on ya lap.

Anyway, that option is already here, all you have to do is connect your laptop/PC to the TV, best of both worlds if you have a laptop, you have a portable PC and a smart TV- and a proper keyboard.

I don't mind watching 3D at all. 2 reasons why I do so though. 1 because I like watching it and 2 because I, like many others, chose to purchase a 3D capable TV but what about 1 or 2 years from now or perhaps now, when ALL large screens will incorporate 3D technology. You'd be paying for it whether you chose to use it or not. I understand there are those that simply cannot watch 3D. My wife wasn't to keen at first because she wears glasses to start with and thought it would be uncomfortable to have to wear 3D glasses as well.

The downside to active 3D is the expense of the glasses themselves. My 6 year old managed to break a pair within a week of us getting them so another £30+ had to be spent replacing them. I suppose that's were "passive 3D" comes into it's own but there are those that say "it isn't as good as active 3D" and that I cant comment on as I haven't seen it on a home tv screen.

As for "smart tv" I think it's a good idea but it can be very clunky and slow to use at times. My wife uses it to catch up on progs she's missed via BBC iPlayer and it would be good to have access to ITV Player, 4OD and D5 and perhaps in the future these apps will be added to ALL smart tv's.

Wearing 3D glasses over normal specs in no problem: if the show is good enough I forget about them.
As far as broadcast 3D is concerned, there's no difference between active and passive. I'm told there is for Blu-Ray but I've never checked. Active specs are a rip off; 7 pairs of passive specs were supplied with my tv.

I agree, active glasses are expensive. I was looking on amazon for 3D glasses for kids and I couldn't believe how much they cost. Up to £130 per pair and that is something I would not spend on glasses to give to my kids so I bought them Samsung 3050GB which I got for around £35 for 2 pairs.
