It's interesting, no great revelations about her or her jewels, but the amounts of money are astonishing...she was absolutely beautiful..and spoilt!

lol..one of the perks of being beautiful I guess is being spoilt.

I wouldn't complain.

The jewellery was mostly given to her, but we also heard in the programme that she would expect those high value gifts.
I wonder why she didn't auction them off while she was alive and donate the money to fund her AIDS campaign?
Having said all that at least she actually wore them and didn't keep them constantly stashed away in a deposit box somewhere.

Why should she have auctioned the jewels before her death? They were her memories...memories of her life and lovers.

Wasn't she just.
The jewels were of such amazing quality too.

Interesting that when she was with Richard Burton, the inference was that she paid for a lot of them herself because she was a much higher earner.

Also interesting that she made so much more money from her perfumes than her acting career.

I thought Joan Collins was having a few little digs without quite over-stepping the mark. A bit of the green eyed monster I imagine?

I found this
Quote:
Much of the Oscar-winning actress’ wealth, which could top $1 billion, is expected to be distributed to charities, including the three charitable foundations she helped create – the National AIDS Research Foundation, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, better known as “AMFAR,” and the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Many commentators expect the bulk of the proceeds from the auction of her jewelry collection, expected to top $150 million, to go directly to these three charitable organizations. Most commentators speculate that the residual of her trust assets will be distributed among her four children and many grandchildren, with whom she had good relations.
The exact terms of Taylor’s estate plan are unknown because she used a trust as her primary estate planning document, rather than a Will. Because a Will requires a probate administration, its terms become public record. Many people prefer to use trusts as their primary estate planning document because of the privacy it offers by avoiding the probate process
Source

I'd read that she was leaving the bulk of her estate to her Aids Foundation, I didn't know she'd been involved with three.

Later in the article it also says that under American law the money left in trust for charitable purposes isn't subject to tax (I'm paraphrasing)

I was literally staggered to see how much some of her collection fetched - the auction house estimates were pitiful by comparison.

^^ I think Joan Collins wanted to be Cleopatra very very much!

They said Elizabeth signed up for Cleo and was paid 1 million dollars..the highest paid actress..wonder how much that would be now!

I was transfixed by this programme and stayed up far later than I planned in order to watch it, but then I am a sucker for glamorous biographies. ET's later image does not appeal to me - I wonder what she saw in that bouffant mess of a hairstyle that she persisted with for years? - but as a young woman she was breathtaking. Yes she was spoilt with all those gifts, and not just from lovers either, but from film companies every time she did a film for them, but there must have been something about her that so many people lavished such extraordinary jewels upon her. It makes me feel very inferior in comparison!

I think she did!

Forbes says that Hollywood's top earning actresses grossed between $2-30M in the year May 2010-2011.
I don't know how that would compare like for like.
How amazing was it though that Elizabeth Taylor could command a replica Las Vegas built in Europe so that she didn't have to go to the States for filming?

Avi8, I'm not sure but I think she hit a period of time when she had incredibly painful back and general health problems and that in turn lead to a weight gain and her change of image with those bouffant wigs.

Oh, here you are

Oh I didn't mean to slate her for her health problems or weight gain. I just wondered about that particular hairstyle which didn't seem to flatter her, after she had been such a glamorous woman, and clearly still cared about her appearance. Sorry, it is not really relevant to this discussion about her jewels.

I didn't take it that you were slating her
I agree it didn't seem to suit her.

It must be difficult for someone like her, when the looks start to go.

They lived in such a rarefied bubble don't you think? Especially telling in the stories of how when they'd bought something at auction they wanted it NOW.

Actually it said in the programme that the estimates were the auctioneer's estimates of the intrinsic value of the jewellery, without the "added value" of the Taylor connection.
That seemed a very professional way of doing it. Everyone would then know how much people were paying above their actual worth as just jewellery.

I thought $300 for an auction catalogue was a bit steep.

I didn't see it from the beginning so I missed that and the cost of the catalogue. I guess they think the catalogue would become a collectors' item in its own right?

PS actually D R, my comment still stands as it just demonstrates the effect of the 'added value' buyers were prepared to pay - the gulf between the two figures is astounding.

It makes me muse over insurance values for such items.

I'm sure it will, may increase considerably in value over the years.
But now everyone is wise to "collecting" so where in the past many such things would have been thrown away, now people will hang on to them so there will always be plenty of them.

Just out of curiosity, I've checked on eBay.
The programme only mentioned one catalogue at $300.

But this entry said this one on offer was one of five different catalogues for the sale.

I thought the programme said she had so much jewellery, the sale catalogue came in 3 volumes. Might be wrong about that though.

When they showed that picture of her at 18yrs old, god she was so breathtaking beautiful...!

I grew up with her films and her *life* etc but she was such an icon wasnt she?

I loved the snippet about her jewels all on a pile on the bed in their chalet in Gstaad!

She had glamour and was glamourous, wasn't she? Probably the last of the great Movie Stars?

When 'they' talk about 'it' - she had 'it' in spades

Sorry, my mistake. I have just checked on 4OD and it is actually 5 volumes to that catalogue. Wow!

Now to re-watch the bit about when she met Richard Burton. I always like hearing that story.
