Must admit it myself that this outage is bad news for GG.

I have been using them now for over a year and never had a single problem, that is until today.

I just can’t believe that a company of this size has all its apples in one server. They really need to pull their socks up or I’m off.

Now where did I put my old Asda sim?

We don't know which part of their network it is.

This sort of thing has happened before on a bigger scale:

But your money, your vote as to whether you stay.

No not an evangelist or even loyal to the brand should something better come along.
It seems that you are ignoring the fact that people are posting that up to this point it's been reliable, pot and kettle come to mind.
I don't need to borrow your phone as my phone is working perfectly thank you. A word of advice, never put all your eggs in one basket....

That article mentions TalkTalk on that occurrence being effect yet I have been with TT for over 6 years and never had any connection problems with them so that could just be the usual BBC media hype.

I’m not deserting the GG ship yet as I am saving a fortune with them.

Fair play - if you're going to use GiffGaff, it's always prudent to have a backup SIM on a network which actually, y'know...works.

Strange thing’s happening, I have not been able to make or receive calls the past 2 or 3 hours with my phone being connected to the 3G system but when I set the phone to connect to 2G only, hay presto, phone calls working.

Bad news is, though this has worked on my San Francisco phone changing to 2G only on my OH’s SF phone did nothing so my phone is working now be it with a 15 – 20 second connection time but the OH, nothing.

Changing from 3G to 2G seems to have made my phone work or may be my phone just started working anyway? As I said, strange.

Can understand if theres been a flood still annoying tho.
But how come the website decides to go kaput at the same time
The website has always been a nightmare most of the time you end up at a "we have gremlins page"
Still one of the best deals out there tho as it all works 99.9 % of the time apart from the friggin website

Its absolutely fine for for me. Just made a call and it connected 1st time.

A temporary outage?

Happens to all the networks from time to time and to some more than others!

As a 100% online company should they not make sure their website is 100% functioning?

From experience I'd say 99.9% is very optimistic

A question, perhaps, for their online support people?

Not sure whether Digitalspy will still exist by the time they reply, mind

Then it would be a copy & paste message that said everything but an actual answer to the question

Cheers, I assumed it probably was fine since we'd have heard about it if not, but wasn't sure.

I have been with Giff Gaff since last October. I have had very few problems since joining.

Data went down a few weeks ago, got £2gw credit from them. The network went down yesterday for a time, didn't bother me too much though as it was back in the afternoon.

I am perfectly happy with Giff Gaff therefore see no reason to change to a different network.

The 3G coverage (o2 coverage) is fantastic.

Got this in an e-mail this morning:

You may have experienced loss of service today (Friday 16th March), we're sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused you.

This was due to a burst water pipe which took out the power at one of our 3rd party suppliers. Engineers have been working on this and have put a fix in place which we are now monitoring for stability. During the period where service is restored you may notice that your service is intermittent.

We're continuing to work on this issue and regular updates will be provided in the community Noticeboard. Additional information is also available via our Blog where our CEO Mike Fairman has popped up a quick update.

Once we are sure that full and stable service has been restored for all members we will look at ways to make it up to you.

Again, sorry for the inconvenience.

Regards,

The giffgaff team

So they are on the case and will be issuing some compensation......more than most have done previously when they have had network outages.

I'm happy!

I'd got my PAC from O2 and my giffgaff sim ready to switch, then this happened. I'd only be saving £5 a month so I'm wondering whether it's it's actually going to be worth it,

They certainly have had more than their fair share of outages:

Nov 2010 http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/11/24/giffgaff_down/

Quote:
“Customers of the "people's network", Giffgaff, found themselves disconnected from the people when the entire network went down for three hours.”

Jan 2012 http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/01...ffgaff_outage/
Quote:
“People-powered phone network GiffGaff left some of its punters without a mobile connection for three weeks and mixed up customers' numbers for several days.”

March 2012 http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/03...ff_down_again/
Quote:
“People-powered O2 spinoff GiffGaff suffered an outage this morning, apparently due to a power cut, and there's no estimated time-to-fix as yet.”

I've only posted the Giffgaff incidents, not the underlying O2 ones, which also knocked the network offline, but were put down to O2.

Whilst it's true all networks may have had issues, I'm always seeing Giffgaff website issues, porting issues, outages, data outages etc.

always looking for Giffgaff??
14 months between the first and second outage.
Quote from the report of the first outage "The outage was considerable, though not unprecedented in mobile networks; but the transparency with which the company addressed the problem, and reported the fix, is something new."
The second outage was not a network problem and only affected a small minority.
The latest incident was beyond anyone's control really.

Trawl Google and you will find horror stories from each and every one of the networks.....Why people get so worked up over GG is a mystery, It's not like anyone is tied to it...

I'm not searching google, I'm reading it on these forums! I also read tech blogs like Slashdot and The Register every day, so I come across these things.

You'd stuggle to find another network of the big 5 with 3 nationwide outages in the last 3 years + no end of website and number porting issues.

From my memory Vodafone had 1 big outage that effected large areas due to a burglary. I can't remember any nationwide or very widespread outages on any of the others except the O2 outages.

A network being unavailable for hours has a big impact on somebody. A job interview, a pregnant wife, waiting for the car while it's being serviced and waiting for a call etc.

Complete outages at an average rate of once a year is not that great you know!
