It was quite difficult fto figure exactly which team person x or person y belonged to.

I've always assumed that it was just an easy way to split the group in half. The alternative would be to split them by drawing lots or using some other random method.

just pick four of the boys, four of the girls, put them together, and the rest are together. Easy.
