Maybe lost a few viewers to the Masters Golf on BBC2.

Should be above 7m in the officials so it's still doing okay.

Poor for ITV1, must be a record low for a day in April. Suggests to me that even the other primetime shows like All Star Family Fortunes and One & Only Des O'Connor rated badly as well.

I don't think they would have expected 10m for the first episode, the advertising rates which were being reported last week indicated that too. It was trailed a lot but no more than something like Downton Abbey's first series launch - and that launched with 7.9m off a 13m X Factor inheritence. So Titanic launching with 10m off a c8m Dancing on Ice lead-in was just not going to happen. If it's consolidated numbers you're talking about, it got 9.1m (inc +1) for the first episode so wasn't that far off that 10m mark. Obviously since then though it's completely collapsed and is rating about 3m lower than where it ought to be really. In that respect, episodes 2 and 3 have been a ratings disaster but I think episode 1 did respectably. The overall situation could've been even worse for ITV if this had been an independent production; with it being ITV Studios and having sold it to 90 territories they did reportedly make a profit on the show before it even transmitted but as I said a few weeks ago, I don't think it's a project which was worth doing anyway in the first place. Might as well have spent the time, resources and money on something completely new which could've had returnable potential and where no comparisons could've been made to previous big-budget movies etc.

Well - on that sort of theme I'd be expecting channels to now be looking towards WWI drama ahead of the 100th anniversary of it beginning in a couple of years time - possibly in returning series format too.

I'd expect War Horse will probably land up on TV in 2014 too.

It comes down to originality too - we've seen it all before many times. One new angle on it which we haven't really seen and could have been interesting is the rescue mission by the RMS Carpathia. TV and film though always focused on the lives lost rather than the lives saved.

Ultimately though the structure of this show means it's three episodes of build up with about five minutes of action at the end of each, then the finale. It might have done better had they kept it all in chronological order.

P.S. There is another Titanic series called Titanic: Blood and Steel (no, it's not a cross with Spartacus), which runs for 12 hours and stars Neve Campbell. Can't see any UK or US broadcaster has picked that up though - and think ITV got theirs on the market first.

With regards a Royal Bodyguard vs Titanic comparison:

Royal Bodyguard
Episode 1 - 7.05m (28.4%)
Episode 2 - 4.50m (17.3%)
Episode 3 - 2.94m (11.7%)

Titanic
Episode 1 - 6.89m (26.6%) , +1: 476k (2.7%)
Episode 2 - 4.38m (17.4%) , +1: 283k (1.6%)
Episode 3 - 3.16m (12.8%) , +1: 365k (1.85%)

The Royal Bodyguard slumped more sharply than Titanic, although as Robbie said earlier, Titanic costs a lot more and was trailed more. (although The Royal Bodyguard definitely should not have flopped the way it did - but it was crap)

2014 will also be the 70th anniversary of D Day

Around 520,000 watched the pilot of Once Upon a Time on timeshift. With adverts stripped out as BARB always do in the data they publish, the consolidated total for episode 1 will be close to 3 million (including +1). Final figures will be published at www.barb.co.uk tomorrow.

With Downstairs and Titanic performing dismally, and Birdsong not doing great, I wonder if viewers are tiring of toffed-up period dramas?

I guess we'll find out in September.....

The One and Only Des O'Connor averaged 3.4m (exc +1)

If this was effectively a pilot for a potential series, I don't think we'll be seeing any more of it.

Cowell pretending he's going to be 'nice' and complimenting The Voice is just another in his long line of PR scams, with the only objective of keeping himself in the news (which his little lapdog The Sun will happily assist in).

For Cowell to really change, he'd have to admit he has made sacks of cash plunging karaoke-type singers into oblivion whilst simultaneously helping to stifle originality and creativity in the music industry, and say he's going to stop. And that ain't gonna happen. Is it?

Those dramas seem to have arrived a few years early, to be honest. BBC One have already aired Birdsong this year, and BBC Two are following it up later in the year with an HBO co-production of Parade's End. Add that to Downton going through WWI last year and War Horse at the cinema - the period has been very 'in vogue' of late. Not sure where else they'll feel the need to tread in a couple of years time.

Many thanks as always - would be grateful if you can post Sunday when you get it (I understand this probably won't be until tomorrow).

What a desperate night for ITV!

The Des show was massively trailed and as an ITV stalwart that is a shocking number!

3.4m for Des O Connor is surely very good?

It's Des O Connor!

(I have no idea why ITV are putting out this stuff but it's certainly a good result)

Irish War of Independence ? Michael Collins movie stylee. Actually that would be right up Fellowes' street but he may have blotted his copy book with Titanic.
