NTV I adored, Grab a Grand, Wait till I Get you Home, the gunge tank, the gotchas, sofa soccer. Brilliant programme. That and Live and Kicking in the morning - superb TV.

By the way - Chris Moyles on Radio 1 very regularly plays the House Party theme tune on his Radio 1 show. Almost on a daily basis in fact.”

Great to see so much House Party love. People remember how bad it was at the end but forget how good it was at the start. For a mainstream show it was very original. NTV was inspired. An excellent show at its peak and if critics weren't so sniffy they should have nominated Noel for a Light Entertainment Performance Award.

Given some of the execrable LE formats we've seen since 1998, even NHP at its nadir was considerably more watchable.

Of course, it was just a natural progression from Noel's other Saturday staples Swap Shop, Late Breakfast Show and Saturday Roadshow. But they got it so absolutely right. It was a mammoth show at its best.

I note that Chris Moyles sometimes plays the original NHP theme tune as background to one of his regular breakfast show features - it does leave me misty eyed every time I hear it. Even the theme tune and titles were perfect.

Which shows how important a good slot (or a bad one) is - up 2m on the previous episode on Friday at 8.30pm.

Notably, it is also 1.2m higher than the £11m "unsinkable" Flop of the Year, yet made with a peanuts budget.

How's about that then, GeorgeS?! (And Lord F...)

Any ratings for the main news bulletins over the long weekend? Also, how has The Planet's Funniest Animals performed for ITV at 6.30pm?
RobbieSykes123
10-04-2012
Strong timeshift for the first Silent Witness episode on 1st April - 7.93m, up 1.23m from the overnight figure.

The Voice UK just short of the 10m mark at 9.93m. The rival load of rubbish got 11.54m.

Titanic sank from 8.41m to 5.78m

Interestingly, The Syndicate didn't go up very much - from 5.4m to 5.87m. Was it fully networked?

Unusual to see MOTD as high as 19th in the BBC1 Top 30, with 4.30m.

Didn't take Voice long to leapfrog the ailing DOI in the reality-talent stakes either...

One of many backers of the drama, ITV committed first, on a three-page treatment, long before the script was ready.”

Sounds a bit like a fast food chain promotion.

That delicious looking hamburger they're touting on the telly is nothing like the one they're going to be selling you.

Here's a look at how the four main broadcasters did in the BARB Monthly Shares for March 2012:

BBC
BBC1: 20.3% (March 2011: 21.0%), BBC2: 6.2% (6.5%), BBC3: 1.5% (1.3%), BBC4: 0.9% (0.7%), BBC HD: 0.2% (0.1%), BBC News: 1.0% (1.5%), CBBC: 0.7% (0.7%), CBeebies: 1.3% (1.3%)
--> Total: 32.1% (March 2011: 33.2%)

ITV
ITV1: 16.8% (17.1%), ITV2: 2.6% (2.3%), ITV3: 2.4% (2.6%), ITV4: 1.1% (1.0%), CITV: 0.3% (0.3%)
--> Total: 23.2% (March 2011: 23.3%)

Channel 4
C4: 7.1% (6.7%), E4: 1.7% (1.8%), Film4: 1.5% (1.1%), More4: 1.1% (1.4%), 4Music: 0.3% (0.3%)
--> Total: 11.7% (March 2011: 11.3%)

Channel 5
C5: 4.6% (4.6%), C5+1: 0.2% (n/a), 5*: 0.5% (0.6%), 5USA: 1.0% (1.0%)
--> Total: 6.3% (March 2011: 6.2%)

Channel 4 (+4%) and Channel 5 (+2%) overall both increased their market shares year-on-year. ITV (-0.4%) slipped slightly while BBC (-3%) experienced the biggest drop out of the four broadcasters. In terms of terrestrial channels, C4 (+6%) experienced y-o-y growth while C5 was stable or even up (+4% inc +1). ITV1 (-2%), BBC1 (-3%), BBC2 (-5%) were all down vs. March 2011.

The BBC's most improved channel were BBC HD and BBC4, in fact it was BBC4's joint best month ever. BBC News was down the most (1/3) compared to a year ago. For ITV: ITV2 and ITV4 showed some decent growth (around +10% each) but ITV3 fell -8%. For Channel 4, E4 had its worst March since 2008 (down y-o-y for the third consecutive month) but Film4 (+36%) is making huge gains at the moment (up y-o-y 11 months straight). More4 must be a worry for them though, down quite a sharp -21% y-o-y and the third month in a row to experience a yearly decline - the channel's revamp doesn't seem to have worked. Over on Channel 5, 5USA was flat but 5* dipped (-10%) compared to a year ago for the second month running.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
And here's a look at how the broadcasters have averaged for the first 3 months of 2012 (January to March) vs. the same period last year:

BBC: 32.6% (Jan-March 2011: 33.0%)
ITV: 23.1% (23.5%)
CH4: 11.4% (11.8%)
CH5: 6.2% (6.0%)

So for the first quarter of 2012, CH5 (+3.3%) was the only broadcaster up year-on-year. The other three broadcasters were down: BBC (-1.2%), ITV (-1.7%), CH4 (-3.4%).

Good to see Channel 4 improving over the year. They seemed to have a tough time.

Is BBC1 likely to dip below 20% this year?

There's going to be a lot of 10+ million shows this year.

The Voice will no doubt break the 10 million mark with the officials for last weeks episode and presumably The X Factor, Strictly and Downton will all top 10 million before the end of the year as well. On top of that there's the Olympic opening (and maybe closing) ceremony which you'd think would also break the 10 million barrier. That would lock us in for a top 10 where everything is above 10 million – could we push a top 15?

Its not impossible that New Tricks might manage to break 10 million with an Autumn run this year. This years Doctor Who Christmas special is going to be the introduction of a new companion so that's got potential to hit highs. Is there a Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas special planned this year? That could do it with the right scheduling. What else am I missing?

There'll be a SCD Christmas special and also a Royle Family if Caroline ever finishes the script she was supposed to be writing for 2011.I wouldn't be surprised to see a CTM

There are two Xmas specials commissioned for 2012 and a further two for 2013. Presumably one of which will get a Xmas Day slot.

He was mentioned as a potential host/panellist for Britain's Got Talent as well, wasn't he? O'Grady seems to turn down a load of stuff, yet he'll happily do some dull chat show. I wonder if he could do a Barrymore-esque series, talking to and messing about with the public. I'm guessing the dogs series he was plugging on Des' show will be an opposite-'stEnders affair.

They normally do, of course, much like how the 6.45 Sunday teatime news always used to be one of their most watched bulletins of the week as it was before Emmerdale. I don't know why The Planet's Funniest Animals has returned with a vengeance, it was on three times on Sunday!
