so a -13% decrease versus last year? back at 2008 levels - if this was the X Factor it would be a crisis

Apprentice appears to do much better in the Summer which of course it can be on then this year due to other things.

Does anybody know what Midsomer Murders got? That might explain why Apprentice didn't rate higher. Never underestimate the power of Midsomer!

Any ratings for EastEnders last night?

I come onto the Forum and see "The Ratings Thread - last post by GeorgeS" so how did I guess it would be bad news for the BBC?

The Apprentice had much tougher competition last night than it did last year. I don't know what last year's opposition was but someone said on here it had 2m viewers. I don't expect Midsomer to do that badly.

Midsomer Murders had 4.7m (inc +1) - that's low for it, possibly its lowest ever for a new episode.

so no excuses for The Apprentice there then? Back to Iain's big book of excuses - try page 2?

I don't know what last year's opposition was because it failed to attract the 2.92m viewers necessary to make ITV1's top 30.

I've now found out from a different source. It was the National Movie Awards.

Last year, The Apprentice launched against factual show 'Home is Where the Heart is' which had 2.14m.

Apologies. Forgot that the Apprentice launched on Tuesday last year - against ITV flopzone Tuesday.

GeorgeS - not having a pop on you. Just pointing out a fact - that Midsomer is a stronger performer in the ratings that what The Apprentice launch faced last year. Not sure the X Factor had the same excuse for its ratings drop.

For what it's worth, I expected The Apprentice to do better than that. I think that's a bit poor even though it'll probably gain about a million in timeshift

edit: The Apprentice: You're Fired also seems a bit poor.

edit edit: Any ratings for the Ten O'Clock News? That might explain You're Fired's performance if people wanted to hear about the Budget.

I've watched every series of the Apprentice but I didn't bother last night. There just doesn't seem to be much point investing in the show when the tasks count for nothing in the finale.

Piers Morgan's Life Stories will go out on Fridays at 9pm. A nice slot after Corrie and loads of press coverage should see it get much better ratings than the Saturday showings I reckon.

The Apprentice did okay, more or less in line with my expectations. Tough week to launch really as the focus is elsewhere.

NCIS suffered massively due to Midsomer as expected, falling to what was easily a season low, although why more didn't take advantage of +1 I don't know.

It's a shame The Apprentice doesn't get better ratings. I think it's one of the best shows on telly.

As for the idea behind Empire, it would have executed better as a BBC One series with an engaging, charismatic host adept at mainstream documentaries, such as Michael Palin, or as a landmark ten or twelve-parter on BBC Two with an out and out expert historian.

As it is, it's fallen between two stools, which might explain why it sat on a shelf for so long.”

Agreed.

Nothing engages me about Empire and there should be something standout for a series like this to go on BBC1. I think its on the main channel simply because it ticks boxes in certain quarters(and maybe helped the Beeb to "give up" on Mondays for a while). I actually enjoyed Paxmans series on Victorian paintings and the ratings were around 4 million I think.Empire just does not work imo.

The Apprentice does look a little on the low side, but it is one of those shows that tends to build its audience as the series progresses anyway.

I would have thought the football on Sky Sports took away a chunk of potential Apprentice viewers.

SS1 Manchester City v Chelsea average 1.28 million; 5.6% share, between 7.30pm and 10.15pm

Five-minute peak of 2.23 million

And over 3m were watching Sky Sports1/2/News in the 9pm hour last night so its not hard to see why The Apprentice, with a large male audience, was dented.
