I think, depressingly, we will discover that that is very much a part of what draws people to these shows. It's sad that people find that kind of thing entertaining, but the fact is if it wasn't something that worked very well they wouldn't do it.
The Voice did threaten to go down the sob story route at one point though which I thought they promised not to do, so maybe it didn't fully live up to its promise in that regard. But overall yes it was well intentioned throughout and that's one major point of difference between the two shows. I'm just not sure it's a strong enough USP to win a ratings war, now or in the future.
