Data Problem on o2

For months now, I've had problems with the data connection on my Samsung Galaxy S on o2.
I've contacted o2 numerous times over these times, and the same advice is given - try your sim in another o2 phone. The thing is , I don't have another o2 phone to try the sim card in.

The main problem is that the Data connectivity seems very intermittent. The little icon with the letters ( g, 3G, H etc) and the little arrows underneath it, sticks on H and stops lighting up for large periods of time, then will randomly change back to G, and start sending/receiving data again. Sometimes it can do that for up to 1 hour at a time, and work again for 5 minutes or so.

My phone was very sluggish and unresposive recently, so I did a factory reset today, and although the speed of the phone has improved, the data is still the same, and infact, I've been unable to get onto the marketplace to download any of my apps.

I'm apparantly in a 5 out of 5 star area when I'm at the university halls, which is where I am now, and the connection back at home ( where the contract is registered under ) is only 2 out of 5, which if I was told that at the time of taking the contract out in Nov 2010, I would not have gone ahead with it.

I really don't know what else to do, as o2 just don't seem to give me any different advice - I did go to the store last month, and was given a new sim card and told that that would be it sorted, but obviously, its not

I've 8 months to go on my contract, and given the bloody hassle I've had with the data side of things, I just wished I could tell them where to shove the contract!

Is there anyone on here really clued up with their technology to give me an indication what it sounds like might be wrong so I can get onto o2 and hit them with what I think is going on?

Thanks so much

You really do need to borrow a spare phone from somebody to test and see if it's your phone. I've heard O2's 3G is not the best, whilst you can't fault their overall talk and test coverage and customer service, their 3G data does often disappoint.
