Our cats, and previous cats, have always understood every word that we say. However, there IS aspecial cat dictionary which can cause misunderstandings in the meaning of phrases. For example:-

'Don't do that' - In cat language this means continue to do that for as long as it amuses you, and when you stop I will likely give you praise and a treat.

'Now' - In cat language this means 'when you feel like it'.

'Stop' - in cat language thisword has no meaning.

'Food' - in cat language this word means crud. 'My food', on the other hand, has a whole different meaning.

Chicken- do not use this word when speaking to cats- they are all terminally addicted and to tease them is cruel.

Tuna- as above.

Bed mice - cats love these. It is not their responsibility that your feet/hands/dangly bits resemble them at 3 am. Stop complaining!

Mine- there is NO mine in the Republic of Cattery. If it's around and worthy of being played with, it's OURS.

And lastly (byOllie),

Those dreadful human words. Nice and kind.

'Be kind to your brother' -as he tries to rip my throat out in fight.

'Be nice to the nurse' - as she tries to put me into a box, which when I com out of it, some VET (spit) will stick some sort of needle into me, almost guaranteed.

Nah, you homos can keep nice and kind. Cats like vengeful and aggressive - they do us fine!

However - when the female homo says 'tickles' to me Iwill (soometimes) go and sit on her knee. She tickles me under the chin. I quite like that. Who says intermittent positive re inforcement does'nt work?

Yes she did. I had communication with my trixie. She knew what I wanted & I knew what she wanted. I'd take a built for her!!

The Beast understands every word we say, both in English and Russian (the OH)

He just chooses to ignore us, or play deaf until it suits him.

Yes!! That's also true of mine ”

Hi
you can get cat grass from most pet shops, or go to amazon they have a really good selection at different prices. Our girls lived in a flat without access to the outside, that's why we bought it. It comes in a seeded tray, to start off you water it and keep it in a warm dark spot, as it starts to grow bring it into the light and just carry on watering it. It grows really well, and you have a tray of lush succulent grass. Lucy use to use it to dislodge a furball. Becky just loved the flavour and would just like to eat it, she also loved raw brussel sprouts as well!.

My late mate, Dennis, loved his veg. Peas were a favorite and watching him suck up single strands of spaghetti gave us hours of amusement!

My girls understand 'treats', 'window' (when I'm opening the window to their cat balcony) 'where's the mousie?' for playtime, although that could well be my tone, and 'I would like you to establish a mode of behaviour more in keeping with the human experience of night-time, given that we have people below us who wish to achieve slumber, rather than your preference of rushing up and down all three floors like juvenile pachyderms'.

They ignore the last one, though.

Our remaining 18 year old cat understands a lot of words. If she gets really annoying when I`m cooking I tell her to Go away. She stalks off to the end of the kitchen and calmly starts to wash. And she keeps her back to me for ages pretending she hasnt been told off. But her ears are like radar-she`s listening for when I dish up! This happens every day and always makes me laugh. Its been the routine for years!

I know my cats language, it's usually "get out of bed now, I'm hungry" repeated until the sachet is open and in her bowl.
She hears and understands my various protestations and profanities regarding this, as I pull the duvet over my head, but she always continues, and always gets her own way.
She's been training me for nearly seventeen years.
I should have learnt by now.

"Treats" - obviously.

One knows "Do you want to knock heads?" which means she gets into the big sitting-room where she jumps onto the mantlepiece and she gets petted while we press foreheads together - strange I know but she loves it.

Other knows a surprised sound - ooohhhh - he thinks I'm telling him there is a cat outside and he runs to the window,

They both know "chicken" and run to the fridge.

They also know "bold" when said in a giving out tone.”

Knocking heads is a way that cats greet other cats who they regard as friends, it's called "butting"

Cats use body language more than sounds, so I think that sitting with her back to you is her way to rebuff you for rejecting her. Cats sometimes wash for the sake of it to take their minds off other things too.

It's actually really unnatural for an animal to look another in the eye unless it wants a fight or is trying to start it down, yet cats are so domesticated we think it odd when they don't look at us.

As for washing to take their minds off things, I'm not sure they have a lot on their minds, but licking their bums certainly gets rid of the taste of cat food.

All 4 of mine are thick and don't understand a single word. That doesn't stop the siamese one from chuntering and gurgling on all day thinking that I can understand him.

My partners dog doesn't mind eye contact. He always gives me puppy dog eye when he wants toast, cheese etc. I can understand him from his facial expressions. He's so adorable.

love this thread

suki only understands a few things and i'm not sure she's just reacting to my voice - she runs to the backdoor if i say 'wanna go out', she knows 'tea time for Suki'. that's about her lot. I talk to her all the time but she's got selective hearing.

9/10 if she's out and i cant see her i yell her name and she always comes running.

Yeah, sorry I let Ollie write that last bit. Well, I say 'let'.......

It's his word for us, the 2 legged species in this family.

My oldest cat Sprinks seems to understand my family and I.

When I say "I am going to bed now" or "I'm just going out of the room" it instinctively follows me into the kitchen.

When we say "No" to it if it goes on my sister's PC or does something naughty, it seems to do it more lol!

Mine understands
'hup up' - he then jumps on the sofa/bed.
outside?
mikits - biscuits

Have just taught him 'tap tap' - I put some of those temptation biscuits on the floor with my hand over them. I then say 'tap tap' or 'you know what to do' and he taps my hand with his paw twice

Who says you cant teach an old cat new tricks?!

Only a few things. She reacts to her name being called and comes to me. She knows, by my tone of voice if I'm upset at her. Like if she's brought a mouse into the house (she likes to chase them) and she recognises the sound of her brush being tapped on the table. I've tried tricking her by tapping the table with other objects, but she always knows

Bella seems to respond to everything but her name. Oh, except when it's raining and she's cowering under a tree, she'll answer to her name then, and then shout at me on her way in for not opening the door sooner.

sounds silly but i swear my cat says my name and my mums when she moews and wants our attention.
Almost like she's trying to pronounce it, surely im not going mad and other cat owners have the same thing? lol
