I've recently discovered a love of music from the 50's & 60's and was wondering what everyone's favourite stuff from that era was?

Curently loving All I Have To Do Is Dream by the Everly Brothers

I love the music from both those decades (I like the seventies and early eighties too, but not as much; as for music since the mid-eighties - forget it!), but there are far too many tracks to list.

For some of my favourite music from the sixties please see my many contributions to both the the 1960's Appreciation Thread and the Rare 60's Classics Thread - if you can find the time!

Off the top of my head, my favourite tracks from the fifties are:-

Lawdy Miss Clawdy - Elvis Presley

Shake Rattle And Roll - Big Joe Turner

Trying To Get To You - Elvis Presley (and much else by Elvis)

Tutti Frutti - Little Richard (and much else by Little Richard)

Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry (and much else by Chuck)

High School Confidential - Jerry Lee Lewis (and much else by Jerry Lee)

Rocket 88 - Jackie Brenston (usually cited as the first ever rock 'n' roll record)

Little Bitty Pretty One - Thurston Harris and the Sharps (and a lot of other tracks also from the Doo-Wop genre)

Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochran

Love Is Strange - Mickey and Sylvia

The Night Time Is The Right Time - Ray Charles

Sixty Minute Man - The Dominoes

Chicken Shack Boogie - Amos Milburn

Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins

Cry Me A River - Julie London

Every Time We Say Goodbye - Ella Fitzgerald

Suzie Q - Dale Hawkins

Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley

Willie And The Hand Jive - The Johnny Otis Show

Rock Island Line - Lonnie Donegan

and loads of others.

Love that track. I am now annoyed with myself that I omitted it from my list!

I like Buddy Holly a lot, but if I were to list every act and every song I like from the fifties then I'd be clogging up this thread in the same way that the threads started by a certain FM (whose username includes a famous American racehorse) have recently been clogging up the music forum.

From the 1950's most of what's in Vabosity's post, plus Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill", Etta James's "The Wallflower" and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers' "Why Do Fools Fall In Love".

Gemma-the-husky's favourite "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" is also a favourite of mine. The Platters were fantastic.

From the 1960's I like almost everything - even the crap from that decade is a 1000 times better than anything in the charts today! (IMO, of course ) .

The Everly Brothers are fantastic. My favourite track by them is "Crying In The Rain".

The Shirelles and the Ronettes are great too. Another sixties girl group worth checking out are the Shangri-Las.

I like quite a bit of 60s music and often list examples on 60s threads. I do not know 50s songs well enough to name any specific faves from then though.

I love the Beatles, but the problem is they were such a phenomenon that we are often led to believe that any music that pre-dates them is not worth listening to. This is, of course, nonsense, as there was a lot of great music in the fifties: Rock 'n' Roll, Blues, Gospel, Rhythm 'n' Blues, Doo-Wop and Jazz, while the pure pop has an archaic charm all of its own.

Fifties music is certainly worth discovering. It's all there on Youtube, of course, and there are some good compilation albums available. I recently bought a three-cd album of fifties R'n'B and Doo-Wop in Tesco for the princely sum of three quid.
