Heritage Handicap. Rather illogical term as it really only means it has prize money above a specified level.

In 1799, 55 years before the Charge that ensured its immortality, the Light Brigade descended on Ascot to sort out a dispute over a bet that had escalated into a riot.

Maisons-Laffitte - the home straight here rivals that at Newmarket for the title of longest in European racing at roughly 1m 2f.

Queen Of Trumps - 1835 Oaks & St Leger winner. The first filly to achieve this double.

Three days after the St Leger the horse was attacked by a bulldog in the final furlong of Doncaster's Scarborough Stakes when looking certain to win. She lost ground and was beaten a short head, her only defeat in eleven races.

Wilson, William - I've no idea who Mr Wilson was but he can't exactly be described as a racing man.

In 1856 he had a few choice words to say about Chester Races which he claimed brought, 'drunkenness, brawling, gambling, theft, prostitution, loathsome diseases, lunacy, suicide, and damnation to the city of Chester'.

Not having been to Chester for a few years I have no idea whether or not things have changed for the better. Let's hope they have.

Zoom - Supervillain in the DC Comics Universe.

Formerly an employee of the Department of Metahuman Hostilities, now a particularly evil member of both the Injustice League & the Secret Society of Supervillains.

In the Equine Universe, Zoom was a 1995 colt by 1981 Kentucky Derby winner Pleasant Colony.

Champagne Stakes - Group 2 event for 2-y-os run at Doncaster over 7f in September. First run in 1823.

In the early days of the race the winning owner was required to give 72 bottles of champagne to the Doncaster Racing Club. Maybe they still have to do that.

Furthermore, courtesy of Wikipedia:

Queen of Trumps began her racing career at Holywell Hunt meeting in Flintshire, North Wales on 14 October 1834. Racing in the Champagne Stakes over half a mile she won from three opponents meaning that Mostyn (her owner), under the conditions of the race, was obliged to present two dozen bottles of champagne to the members of the local racing club.
I wonder if all races designated 'Champagne Stakes' originally demanded (or still demand) a gift of champagne from the winning owner.

Formosa. The first horse to win 4 English classics in 1868, only Sceptre has done it since.
