Byerley Turk - the only one of the three foundation sires known to have taken part in a race.
It took place at Downpatrick in March 1690 between the Turk and two other horses. All three were ridden by army officers. One account has Colonel Heyford's Barb as the winner but another tells of the Turk galloping off in the wrong direction at the start. When he got back on course he was 1½m behind the others (in a 3m race) but he duly chased them down and got to the line a length in front.
The Byerley Turk (and Colonel Byerley) were combatants at the Battle of the Boyne later the same year.
