Maybe he'll note that Camilla's ex, Andrew Parker-Bowles was a much better race rider than Charles could ever be.

Excellent Recovery - courtesy the Grand National Anorak:

Quote:
“In 1969 the gallant Captain rode in his one and only National on Aintree stalwart The Fossa. Up with the leaders from the off they make a slight mistake at the big ditch but that was nothing compared to what they were going to do at the next fence. The Fossa hit the fence extremely hard and the Captain is catapulted over the horses head.

As the camera pans through the leaders the Captain in the dark red colours is seen to be clinging to the horses head with both feet not only out of the stirrups but hanging over the horses side! The horse has not lost any momentum and is still galloping at full speed. If you look carefully you can see Andy Turnell on Kellsboro Wood in the gold silks leaning out of the saddle with an arm outstretched. By the fifth fence the Captain and The Fossa are re-united and still in the race.

Did Andy Turnell haul the Captain back onto the saddle ? I cannot be certain but in the interests of fair play and good sportsmanship I'd like to think he did.”

I can't find a video of this incident (I doubt one is available) but Parker-Bowles did go on to complete the course.

I think it was established that Andy T at least tried to haul Andy P-B back into the saddle and I'm sure there's film to show this. My recollection is that it wasn't the only time such a rescue act was made in NH racing. I well remember Kellsboro Wood and remember even better that grand old horse.............

Itchycoo Park. 1960's Small Faces psychedelic hit and horse of the same name who raced in 2006 but judging by its exploits on the track was spaced out.

Jaguar - police horse attached to the Merseyside Constabulary.

Led in Ballabriggs to the winners enclosure after last year's Grand National and maybe performed the same function this year for all I know.

Master Oats. Described as an ugly duckling whose rider declared you'll be lucky to win a race with him his trainer Kim Bailey decided to abandon a conventional training regime for him and switched to long hacks and long slow canters whereupon on route to his 15 length 1995 Gold Cup victory he won the Rehearsal Chase, The Welsh National and the Pillar Chase.

Nicholson, David - trainer of 1,500 winners in a 31 year career.

Nicholson suffered from 32 different allergies, one of which was horses.

Oliver Carter.....trained his own horses at or near Ottery St. Mary in Devon and as far as I recall, included "otter" in all his horses names. Great supporter of both point to point and NH racing and rewarded when he got a classy horse called Otter Way. I seem to remember after he retired from training he placed at least one of his horses with Paul Nicholls.

Prince Regent - 1946 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner at the age of 11 and unlucky to be foaled when he was.

Wartime restrictions by English & Irish racing authorities confined his activities to Ireland until 1946 otherwise his Gold Cup tally would have probably been greater.

Ypsilanti - small city in Washtenaw County, Michigan (pop. 19,435).

For years this city has been trying to establish a connection between it and the racehorse Ypsilanti that won several good races in Britain in the early 1900s.

This they have failed to do but irrespective, Ypsilanti was a very good horse that won two runnings of the Great Jubilee Handicap at Kempton (1903 & 1904) when that race was of far more consequence than currently.

Derives from the cockney rhyming slang bottle of spruce = deuce where spruce was some kind of beer, or possibly lemonade.
