Durkan, John - identified Istabraq as a hurdling prospect and bought him for 38,000 guineas on behalf of JP McManus.

Before he could begin training the horse Durkan contracted leukaemia. He died in January 1998, 2 months before Istabraq won his first Champion Hurdle.

The 2½m Grade 1 John Durkan Memorial Chase is run at Punchestown in December.

Snow Fairy lost the 2012 Prix Jean Romanet when she was tested positive for some kind of anti-inflammatory drug, thereby putting her G1 score back down to 6.

And 6 it will forever remain after she was retired earlier this week having aggravated an old tendon injury.
