Friday - until 1947 the Grand National was run on a Friday (i.e. the second day of the three day meeting) at which point it was moved to Saturday.

For some reason the 1957 renewal reverted to Friday but the race was held on Saturday again the following year and has been ever since (apart from 1997 when the postponed contest took place on Monday).

Gorytus. Much hyped 2yo who after easily winning the Accomb at York and the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster trailed home in the 1982 Dewhurst at 2-1 on 37 lengths behind the winner. Despite strong rumours he'd been got at no evidence was ever found and the colt disapppointed thereafter and when sent to the US he gained a reputation as being ungenuine.

Lowther Stakes - Group 2 fillies contest run on the Thursday of the Ebor meeting. One of the races picked up by Cawston's Pride for her 7-timer.

Occasionally a guide to the following year's 1,000 Guineas, the last filly to win both races being Russian Rhythm in 2002/2003.

Ruffian - the highest rated US filly of the 20th century. Right up there with, and possibly ahead of, Zenyatta & Rachel Alexandra.

In July 1975 she was 10 from 10 when racing a match with that year's Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure. Then this happened.

Quote:
“As Ruffian left the starting gate, she hit her shoulder hard before straightening herself. The first quarter-mile (402 m) was run 221⁄5 seconds, with Ruffian ahead by a nose. Little more than 1 furlong (201 m) later, Ruffian was in front by half a length when both sesamoid bones in her right foreleg snapped. Vasquez tried to pull her up, but the filly wouldn't stop. She went on running, pulverizing her sesamoids, ripping the skin of her fetlock and tearing her ligaments until her hoof was flopping uselessly. Vasquez said it was impossible for him to stop her. She still tried to run and finish the race.”

Surgery was carried out but failed and there was no option but to euthanise.
