Haldon....the name given to the Devon and Exeter also referred to both now and in the past as Exeter racecourse at about the same time as other racecourses had their names changed for seemingly no particular reason; Musselburgh for Edinburgh and Brampton for Huntingdon.......the mind boggles as to why!

Il Palio - race with a long history that takes place around the town square in Siena, Italy, in July & August.
The winner is the horse that passes the post first irrespective of whether or not the jockey is still aboard. |

I'll Have Another who cost a mere $11,000 as a yearling and $35,000 as a 2yo followed up his Kentuck Derby victory with a win in the Preakness and goes for the Belmont Stakes in a bid to become the first US Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

Mr Chippendale - won a point-to-point somewhere in 1994 but got chucked out by the stewards because his rider failed to weigh in. After a walkover.

Old Tom-early/mid60s horse, trained I think by Harvey Leader, with whom I was offered the chance of interview as an apprentice but never took it up. Lawd knows how many times Old Tom was at or near the top of the betting for both the Lincoln and the Cambridgeshire.

Pontefract - afternoon meetings here used to start at the (then) unusual time of 2.45pm simply to allow local miners just off shift to get there in time for the first.

Rothwell - market town 10 miles north west of Pontefract.
The journey takes about 15 minutes so if you leave Rothwell at half past two you should just make the racecourse by quarter to three. |
